Evaluation of Test Cross of Field Corn Hybrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirteen single cross field corn hybrids were evaluated along with two commercial checks 900M and BARI hybrid maize 9 at BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi 2014-15. Significant differences were observed among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The genotypes showed significant variations among them for the traits studied. Range of days to tasseling and silking were from 83 to 95 days and 87 to 99 days, respectively. Five crosses showed about one week earliness than check BHMB 9. Plant and ear height ranged from 149 to 205 cm and 70 to 92 cm, respectively. The lowest plant height was observed in the hybrid 7074/S₃-9×BIL-113. Most of the hybrids were significantly lower than BHM 9. The lowest ear height was found in 9MG/S₄-9 × 9MS/S₆-12. Ear length ranged from 15 to 18 cm which showed identical ear length with BHM-9. The yield contributing traits number of grains/ear and 1000-grain weight showed significant variations and ranged from 339 to 621 number of grains and 290 to 410g, respectively. Highest variation was observed in 1000-grain weight. Yield showed significant variations among the entries, which ranged from 8.50 to 13.64 t/ha. Considering high yield and overall performance, three hybrids 9MG/S₄-17 × 9MS/S₆-4, 9MG/S₄-9 × Pac60/S₄-19 and 9MG/S₄-10 × Pac60/S₄-19 were found promising for grain yield and yield components and other traits like shorter plants

Objectives:

Methodology:

Thirteen locally developed test cross hybrids of field corn and two checks viz. 900M and BARI hybrid maize 9 (BHM-9) were evaluated in RCBD at BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi 2014-15. Seeds were sown on 10 November, 2014. Experimental design was alpha lattice with two replications. Spacing was 60 x 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. After seedling emergence one healthy plant per hill was kept. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All intercultural operations were done according to the necessity. Data on yield, root lodging, days to tasseling and silking were recorded on whole plot basis. For convenience, plot yield was converted to ton/ha. Data on plant height (cm), ear height (cm), ear length (cm), number of grains per ear and 1000 grain weight (g) were recorded from ten plants randomly. The data were analyzed using Crop Stat (version 7.2) program.

Achievement/Findings:

Two entry (9MG/S₄-17×9MS/S₆-4 and 9MG/S₄-9×Pac60/S₄-19) showed high mean performance and significantly higher yield over both the checks. These two hybrids also showed high mean values for grains/ear and 1000-grain weight. The cross 9MG/S₄-10×Pac60/S₄-19,also showed higher but not significant yield over the checks. From the overall performance three hybrids 9MG/S₄-17 × 9MS/S₆-4, 9MG/S₄-9 × Pac60/S₄-19 and 9MG/S₄-10 × Pac60/S₄-19 were found promising and selected.
