Evaluation of Test Cross Baby Corn Hybrids (set I)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at BARI Research field, Joydebpur during rabi 2014-15 with 35 locally developed baby corn hybrids along with a check variety babystar to test their performance and select better one(s). All the traits showed significant variation except last cob harvest, interval between first and last cob harvest and ear diameter. Fourteen crosses were selected based on number of cobs per plant, interval of cob harvesting, yield, earliness and other desirable agronomic traits.

Objectives:

This program was undertaken to evaluate the baby corn hybrid through test cross

Methodology:

Thirty five test crosses of baby corn along with one check Baby star were evaluated following Alpha lattice design with 2 replications at Joydebpur during rabi 2014-15. Seeds were sown on 10 November 2014. Unit plot size was single row 5 m long maintaining spacing 60 cm from row to row and 20 cm from plant to plant. Fertilizers were applied @ 150, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All intercultural operations were done according to the necessity. Data on green fodder yield, days to tasseling, pollen shedding and silking were recorded on whole plot basis. For convenience, plot yield was converted to ton/ha. Data on plant and ear height (cm), ear length (cm), ear diameter (cm) were recorded from ten plants randomly. After harvesting, weight of cobs with husk (g) and without husk cover (g) were recorded. Data were analyzed according to Singh and Chaudhary (1985).

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences were observed for all the characters among the entries except days to last cob harvest, interval between first and last cob harvest and ear diameter. Days to tasseling ranged from 87 to 99 days and that of number of cob per plant and plant height was from 3 to 5 and 94 to 199 cm respectively. Lower and upper ear height ranged from 28 to 63 cm and 56 to 120 cm respectively. Weight of single cob with and without husk was ranged from 44 to 75 g and 5 to 10 g respectively. Maximum variability was observed in ear diameter. In case of number of cobs per plant 19 crosses exhibited highest 5 cobs per plant, while only the check possessed 3 cobs/plant.. The cross BCP 271/S₄-18×BCP 271/S₄-16 gave highest yield where the cross BCP 271/S₄-10×BCP 271/S₄- 3 resulted lowest yield. Regarding green fodder yield the cross BCP 271/S₄-20×BCP 271/S₄- 19 yielded highest and cross BCP 271/S₄-10×BCP 271/S₄- 3 was the lowest which also the lowest yielded in respect of yield per plant.

Considering number of cobs per plant, number of days to harvesting interval, green fodder yield and baby cob yield (ton/ha), and other desirable traits fourteen crosses (BCP 271/S₄-5×BCP 271/S₄-6 , BCP 271/S₄-9×BCP 271/S₄-19 , BCP 271/S₄-12×BCP 271/S₄-4, BCP 271/S₄-13×BCP 271/S₄-7, BCP 271/S₄-13× BCP 271/S₄-10, BCP 271/S₄-13×BCP 271/S₄-20, BCP 271/S₄-15×BCP 271/S₄-19, BCP 271/S₄-16×BCP 271/ S₄-4, BCP 271/S₄ -16×BCP 271/S₄-6, BCP 271/S₄-18×BCP 271/S₄-6, BCP 271/S₄-18×BCP 271/S₄-16, BCP 271/S₄-20×BCP 271/S₄- 6, BCP 271/S₄-20×BCP 271/S₄- 19 and BCP 271/S₄-21×BCP 271/S₄- 19) were found promising and selected
