Evaluation of Test Cross of Baby Corn Hybrids (set Ii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Joydebpur during rabi 2014-15 with 33 locally developed sister line crosses of baby corn hybrid with a commercial check Baby star to test their performance and select better one(s). Significant difference was found in days to tasseling and silking, plant height, ear height, number of cob/plant, wt. of cob without husk, green fodder weight, days to 1^stcob harvest and duration of cob harvest. Considering earliness, cob number with little bit lower harvest duration the cross KH-101/S3-28×KH-101/S3-14, KH-101/S3-36×KH-101/S3-31, KH-101/S3-14×KH-101/S3-5, KH-101/S3-17×KH-101/S3-20 and KH-101/S3-1×KH-101/S3-2 could be selected for further advancement

Objectives:

This program is undertaken to evaluate baby corn hybrid locally with multiple cobs and to develop superior baby corn hybrid.

Methodology:

Thirty three test cross baby corn hybrids along with a commercial check were evaluated following RCB design with 2 replications at Joydebpur during rabi 2014-15. Seeds were sown on 22 November 2014. Unit plot size was single row 5 m long maintaining spacing 75 cm from row to row and 20 cm from plant to plant. Fertilizers were applied @ 150, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All intercultural operations were done according to the necessity. Data on green fodder yield, days to tasseling, pollen shedding and silking were recorded on whole plot basis. For convenience, plot yield was converted to ton/ha. Data on plant and ear height (cm), ear length (cm), ear diameter (cm) were recorded from ten plants randomly. After harvesting, weight of cobs with husk (g) and without husk cover (g) were recorded. Data were analyzed SAS (Version 9.3) statistical software and hererosis was performed by AGRISTAT (V.6.2003) software.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences were observed for all the characters except plant height, cob length, cob diameter, cob wt with husk and yield/plant. The range of days to tasseling was 76 to 92 days, days to silking from 81 to 96 days and that of plant height was from 125 to 157 cm. Ear height ranged from 27 to 99 cm., number of cobs 2-4, cob length 7.20-8.67 cm, weight of single cob without husk was from 47.8-11.90 g. to 15 g. The yield/plant ranged from 21.6-35.4g and green fodder from 322.7-636.8 g. Interval between first and last cob ranged from 7.3 to16.5 days. It was observed that most of the F₁s were early in terms of days to tasseling and silking. KH-101/S3-33×KH-101/S3-20, KH-101/S3-36×KH-101/S3-35, KH-101/S3-46×KH-101/S3-35, KH-101/S3-17×KH-101/S3-20, KH-101/S3-16×KH-101/S3-36, KH-101/S3-10×KH-101/S3-11 were earlier than check with heterosis of ≈15%.Among these F₁s KH-101/S3-36×KH-101/S3-35, KH-101/S3-46×KH-101/S3-35, KH-101/S3-16×KH-101/S3-36, KH-101/S3-10×KH-101/S3-11 had slightly (-2 to -5% heretosis) shorter than the check. However, genotype KH-101/S3-12×KH-101/S3-15 and and KH-101/S3-35×KH-101/S3-36 which have about 10% heterosis for earlier showed approximate -15% heretosis for shorter plant height. In case of ear height, most of the F₁s had lower ear height along with significant negative heterosis. It was remarkable that the lower and upper err height were lower than the check. F₁s like KH-101/S3-28×KH-101/S3-14, KH-101/S3-36×KH-101/S3-31, KH-101/S3-14×KH-101/S3-5 and KH-101/S3-17×KH-101/S3-20, KH-101/S3-1×KH-101/S3-2 had almost similar number of cobs/plant to check, and all of the genotypes were earlier than check to some extent. Cob length was almost similar as compared to check. However, most of them the duration of cob between 1^st and last cob harvest was higher than the chek except KH-101/S3-1×KH-101/S3-2 which took same number of day to silk as check. Interestingly genotype KH-101/S3-28×KH-101/S3-14 has higher fodder weight as well as check, but the harvest duration is higher. Another genotype KH-101/S3-15×KH-101/S3-11 has also higher fodder, but produced lower number of cobs.

Considering all it was found that most of the new F₁s are earlier than the check and started cob earlier harvested also earlier. However, the harvest duration was higher in most of the cases. Similar cob number, early with little bit higher harvest duration of crosses like KH-101/S3-28×KH-101/S3-14, KH-101/S3-36×KH-101/S3-31, KH-101/S3-14×KH-101/S3-5 and KH-101/S3-17×KH-101/S3-20, KH-101/S3-1×KH-101/S3-2 could be selected.
