Comparative performance of economically important characters viz. number of leaves plant-1, root length, shoot length, root diameter, fresh root weight, fresh shoot weight, root dry weight and shoot dry weight of BU Hybrid Mula -1 along with other four commercial radish varieties, Tasakisan, Druty, Rocky-45 and Everest were analyzed at vegetative stages e.g., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) in early and optimum growing seasons. Results on comparative performance of BU Hybrid Mula-1 and other varieties revealed that the all varieties exhibited significant differences in root length, shoot length, root diameter, fresh root weight, dry root weight and dry shoot weight in both early and optimum growing seasons (Nov. to Jan.). Locally developed hybrid radish variety “BU Hybrid Mula-1” produced the highest fresh shoot and dry shoot weight at early growing season while in optimum growing season, BU Hybrid Mula-1 produced the highest dry shoot weight. In case of other economic characters i.e. yield for fresh weight, BARI developed open pollinated radish variety “Druty” performed better at early growing season, while the exotic hybrid radish variety “Everest” performed better compared to other four varieties during optimum growing season.

Objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of economically important characters of Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Hybrid Mula-1 (BU Hybrid Mula -1) along with other four commercial radish varieties

In this experiment, a comparative performance analysis economically important characters of newly released hybrid radish “BU Hybrid Mula-1” along with four other open pollinated (OP) and exotic hybrid radish varieties was studied in early growing season (October to December, 2002) and in optimum growing season (November 2002 to January 2003). In early growing season seeds of different varieties were sown on 2 October 2002 in pots in the vinyl house protected from rainfall and covered with vinyl film only at the roof part to prevent excessive rise in air temperature in it and not to prevent pollinator attendance. Seedlings emerged within 3 to 4 days after sowing in the pots. On the other hand, for optimum growing season seeds were sown on 24 November 2002 in the field when there was less rainfall. In field, seedlings emerged within 3 to 4 days after sowing. Five cultivars, viz. Tasakisan, Druty, Rocky-45, Everest and BU Hybrid Mula-1 were included in the study. The pot experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Design with three replications while that in the field in Randomized Complete Block Design. The performance of BU Hybrid Mula-1 with existing commercial cultivars was analyzed with respect to eight economically important characters viz. number of leaves plant-1, root length, shoot length, root diameter, fresh root weight, fresh shoot weight, root dry weight and shoot dry weight. Well developed and only selected competitive plants from each of the varieties were harvested in six intervals (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 DAS). Root and shoot weight were taken at fresh and dry conditions. Total number of leaves plant-1 was counted. Root and shoot length were taken from the base of the foliage to the tip of the root and from the tip of the leaf to the base of the foliage respectively. Girth of the root was taken at the point where the value was maximum. Finally the data were analyzed statistically following the principle of Analysis of Variance and Least Significant Different (LSD) test.

The locally developed hybrid radish variety (BU Hybrid Mula-1) produced the highest fresh shoot as well as dry shoot weight in early growing season and also produced the highest dry shoot weight in optimum growing season. Interestingly, BU Hybrid Mula-1 produced the highest yield at early vegetative stage of early growing season pointing out that this variety may be used as a “shakh” or leafy vegetable variety at early growth stage of early growing season. This variety also seemed to possesses quick growing habit and suitable for early harvest.
