Evaluation of Jamun (syzygium Cumini) in the Hilly Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on five years old; seven jamun germplasm established in the minor fruit block of Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. The highest number of fruits per tree (5240) was recorded in SC Rai-005 and the lowest (2340) in SC Rai-001. The earliest flowering (late January) and harvest (mid May) were observed in SCRai001 and the latest flowering (mid April) and harvest (late June) were noted in case of SC Rai-007. Maximum fruit size (3.00 × 2.33 cm), individual fruit weight (9.23 g), flesh thickness (7.47 mm), edible portion (85.92%) and TSS (14.80 %) were recorded in SC Rai-004. Fruits of all the genotypes were black in color, oblong in shape with flat fruit apex.

Objectives:

To evaluate superior jamun germplasm available in the hilly area.

Methodology:

The investigation was done using seven grafted Jamun germplasm, established in the minor fruits block of Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14. Seven jamun germplasm viz., SC Rai-001, SC-Rai-002, SC-Rai-003, SC Rai-004, SC Rai-005, SC Rai-006 and SC Rai-007 were transplanted in 2009 maintaining spacing of 8 m × 8 m. The soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 15 kg/plant, 230g N, 185 g P₂O₅ and 240g K₂O per plant per year. NPK were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MoP, respectively in two equal installments in a year, the first during October and the second during May. Intercultural operations like irrigation, weeding etc. were done as per requirement. Data on plant growth, yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on fruit size, individual fruit weight, flesh thickness, edible portion, TSS, organoleptic taste and fruit yield SC Rai-004 was found superior and might be released as a variety.
