Evaluation of Star Gooseberry (phyllanthus Acidus L.) in Hilly Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station of Raikhali under Rangamati Hill District during 2013-14 for the evaluation of seven years old six star gooseberry germplasm. The highest number of fruits per plant (12246) was recorded in PA Rai-006 and the lowest (7463) in PA Rai-005. Four fruiting time per year were observed in all the treatments providing fruits about round the year. Maximum individual fruit weight (4.10 g), TSS (5.99 %) and very good organoleptic taste were obtained from PA Rai-001 with fruit yield of 34.06 kg/plant/year. The highest number of fruits (12246) and yield (44.09 kg) per plant per year were recorded in PA Rai-006 having good organoleptic taste with TSS (5.10%)

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the available star gooseberry genotypes in the hilly area to release a suitable variety.

Methodology:

Several star gooseberry genotypes were collected from different parts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and transplanted in the minor fruit block of ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2007. There were six genotypes i.e., PA Rai-001, PA Rai-002, PA Rai-003, PA Rai-004, PA Rai-005 and PA Rai-006. The soil was fertilized with well decomposed cowdung @ 5 kg/plant, 205g N, 172 g P₂O₅ and 225g K₂O per plant per year. NPK were applied in the form of urea, TSP and MoP, respectively in three equal installments in a year. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The performance data of star gooseberry genotypes were taken duly.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the individual fruit weight, organoleptic taste and TSS with satisfactory number of fruits and yield per plant per year, PA Rai-001 was found superior and might be recommended for release as a new variety of star gooseberry .
