Evaluation of Promising Maize Hybrids at Different Agro-ecological Regions of Bangladesh (set Ii)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study assessed genotype-environment interaction (GEI) and stability for days to tasseling, days to silking, plant height, ear height, and grain yield of 10 hybrids including three checks across three different locations during 20014-15. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) and GGE model (genotypes+genotypes × environment) were used to assess the additive and multiplicative effects of the interaction. Significant variation for genotypes (G), environment (E) and genotypes (G), environment (E) Interaction ( I ) (GEI ) were found for all the characters. The environment Gazipur was poor and Barisal and Rangpur are rich environments for hybrid maize production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di three parameters, it was evident that all the genotypes showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Among the hybrids G6, G7 and BHM 9 exhibited bi~1 and S²di~0 for all the characters, indicated that the hybrids are stable across the environment. The hybrid G10 (Pioneer 30V92) had bi value significantly different from the unity with non significant S²di value indicating high responsiveness of the hybrid but suitable for favorable environments. G6 and G7 is good yielded and stable over environments. Considering the yield and potentiality and stability parameter two hybrids (G6 and G7) were found promising across locations

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of single cross promising hybrids, under different agro-ecological zones and select better one(s).

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at three locations viz; Gazipur, Rangpur and Barisal during rabi 2014-15. The materials consisted of 7 promising hybrids and three local checks, viz. BARI Hybrid Maize 9, NK40 and Pioneer 30V92 were evaluated in this trial. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. Seeds of each entry were sown in 2 rows, 4m long plot at 60 cm and 20 cm spacing. Seeds were sown on 19 November, 22 November and 20 November 2014 at Gazipur, Rangpur and Barisal, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn, B, respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as required. All data were processed and analyzed using Cropstat 6.1 program.

Achievement/Findings:

The mean sum of squares for the genotypes was highly significant for all the traits which revealed the presence of genetic variability in the material under investigation for all the characters studied. Environments mean sum of squares were highly significant for days to tasseling, silking, plant height, ear height and yield. The highly significant effects of environment indicate high differential genotypic response across the different environments. Environment relative magnitude was much higher than the genotypic effect, suggesting that performance of each genotype is influenced more by environmental factors. In Gazipur, highest yield was found from G7 (12.77 t/ha) followed by G6 (11.91 t/ha) and NK 40 (11.80 t/ha). G7 produced highest yield (13.73 t/ha) than E6 (12.40 t/ha) and G10 (Pioneer 30V92) in Barisal. Similarly G7 was given highest yield (13.50 t/ha) in Rangpur followed by G6 (13.00t/ha) and Pioneer 30V92. Considering overall mean grain yield across the three locations promising hybrid E7 (13.33t/ha), G6 (12.44 t/ha) and Pioneer 30V92 (11.87t/ha) produced higher yield. The environmental mean and genotypic mean ranged from 10.83 t/ha to 11.50 t/ha and 9.88 t/ha to 13.33 t/ha. Five hybrids showed positive phenotypic index while the other genotypes had negative phenotypic index for yield. Thus, positive phenotypic index represents the higher yield and negative represents the lower yield among the genotypes. Again, positive and negative environmental index (Ij) reflects the rich or favorable and poor or unfavorable environments for this character, respectively. Thus the environment of Gazipur, was poor where as Rangpur and Barisal were positive environments for hybrid maize production. Rangpur was highly suitable for hybrid maize cultivation followed by Barisal. differences in bi values indicated that all the genotypes responded differently to different environments. Among the hybrids G6, G7, and BHM 9 exhibited the higher grain yield, bi~1 and S²di~0 indicated that the hybrids are stable across the environment. The hybrids Pioneer 30V92 exhibited higher grain yield but their bi value showed significantly different from the unity with non significant S²di value for one or more characters studied indicating high responsiveness of the hybrid but suitable for favorable environments. Considering the yield potentiality and stability parameter, G6, G7 and BHM 9 exhibited higher yielding as well as stable over all environments.
