Influence of seedling age, nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) rates on lodging of a low input variety, BRRI dhan32, was investigated. Field survey was conducted to find out farmer's perception about lodging and fertilizer management techniques in T. Aman rice (Oryza sativa L.). The crop did not lodge under researcher's management even at 210 kg N/ha. The highest grain yield of 6.27 t/ha was recorded at 60 kg N and 60 kg K/ha with 30-day-old seedlings. Plant height and internodes circumference varied significantly because of N and K rates and seedling age. Internodes length increased with increasing seedling age at N40K40 and N60K40. Farmers used unbalanced fertilizer dose for growing rice. About 8% farmers reported that that BRRI dhan32 lodged because of excessive urea application, but more than 50% farmers reported that storm and weak basal part of the variety was responsible for lodging. This variety could be cultivated in coarse textured soils with 60 kg N/ha and 40-60 kg K/ha, provided N and K fertilizers are applied in splits.

1. To find out the influence of seedling age, N and K rates and its application practices on lodging of BRRI dhan32.

2. To find out farmer's perception about lodging and fertilizer management techniques in T. Aman rice (Oryza sativa L.).

The trials were conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional Station, Rangpur during 1999 and 2000. Soil properties of the experimental plots were, light textured (sand, 41%; silt, 49.41% and clay, 9.61%) with low organic carbon (1.1); pH, 5.36, available P, 38 ppm; Ca, Mg, and K are 2.8, 0.85 and 0.18 mg/100 g respectively. A randomized completely block design with three replications was used. During 1999, influence of 8 N rates viz., 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 kg/ha on grain yield was investigated. Phosphorus, K and S were applied as basal at the rates of 60, 40 and 30 kg/ha of P2O5, K2O and S respectively. Sources of N, P, K and S were urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (KCI) and gypsum respectively. Forty- day old seedlings were used in 1999. Based on yield of first trial, 60 kg N/ha was considered as cut off N rate. So treatments were redesigned in 2000 to investigate some plant parameters. Two N and K rates (30 and 60 kg /ha each) on performance or BRRI dhan32 was investigated at four seedling ages (30, 45, 60 and 75 day-old). Same P fertilizer rate was used during second set of experiments. In first trial, all TSP, KCl and gypsum were applied as basal dose. One-third urea was applied at IS days after transplanting (DAT) and the rests were applied in two equal splits at 45 DAT and 60 DAT. In second set of experiments, fertilizers were applied similarly except KCI, which was, applied in two equal splits at basal and at 30 DAT. Two to three seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm x 15 cm spacing in 4 m x 3 m plots. The crop was grown as rain fed, however, supplemental irrigation was provided if there was no rain for seven days. Weeding was done at 15 and 45 DAT and Furadan 3G was applied at 15 kg/ha at 45 DAT for controlling insects. The crop was harvested (excluding two border lines) when 90% of the grains in a panicle were golden yellow. Gram yield was adjusted at 14%, moisture content. Plant height was measured randomly from 10 hills at harvest. Randomly selected 10 uprooted plants were used for collecting data on internodes length, number of nodes and node diameters at harvest. Data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure.
