Adjustment of Stevia (stevia Rebaudiana) in the Agro-climatic Condition of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out in the Agronomy Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during July to November 2008 to find out the effect of environment and stem cutting on the survivable percentage of Stevia. The treatments consisted of three environment viz. straw shade (2 feet above soil surface), polythene cover (2 feet over soil surface), open sky and two stem cutting viz. with leaves, without leaves. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Total number of plots was 24. Procedure of plantation: 8-10 cm stem cutting were collected from the branch of mother plant and placed in to the different environmental factors according to experimental specification. The straw shade produced the highest survivability percentages (67.17%) followed by polythene shade (11.83%). The lowest was recorded (7.17%) from open sky treatment. It may be due to the reception of higher radiation by young leaves, thus higher mortality percentage was recorded with open sky treatment. The stem cutting with leaves produces consistently higher yields than without leaves cuttings. At the final stage highest percentage of survivability (36.33%) was obtained from stem cuttings with leaves followed by the treatment without leaves. This could be due to the higher photosynthesis accumulation by the young green leaves present with the cuttings. The combined effect of straw shade and stem cutting with leaves contributed significantly the highest survivable of 90.33% followed by straw shade × stem cutting without leaves (44.00%) survivable which is less than 50% of the highest one. The lowest 6.67%) was obtained from open sky × stem cuttings without leaves treatment. The straw shade × stem cutting with leaves was proved to be the best environment friendly treatment combination for better survival of Stevia seedlings.

Objectives:

1. To introduce stevia as a field crop in Bangladesh. 2. To find out the appropriate time of planting of stevia. 3. To find out the appropriate method of propagation compatible with socio-economic status of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Three separate experiments will be conducted with the financial assistance of this project. First one is oriented to know the time of planting. Other tow is oriented to know the suitable method of propagation. For the first one, stevia seedlings will be planted from 1st July’ 08 to 31st June’ 09 in different plots maintaining all the experimental principals. For second one propagation will be done by stem cutting method with different treatments to find out the suitable method of propagation. And the last one will be oriented to determine the appropriate time of cutting best for propagation of stevia through stem cutting.

Achievement/Findings:

1. Appropriate time of planting of stevia a new crop having high potentiality to the national economy if it could be cultivated at large scale. As a new crop it is very much important to know the proper time of planting for commercial plantation. 2. Suitable propagation method. It is the most important thing for commercial plantation. Tissue culture is one of the effective way of propagation but it requires shopisticated equipments and technology which is not available to the farmers level. So stem cutting or other easy propagation method which is suitable for the poor farmers of our country to be developed. This project will be helpful to find out the suitable method of propagation of stevia.
