Field Trials of BARI Bt Begun 1 in Rangpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five field trials of BARI Bt begun 1 were carried out at Gangachara, Rangpur Sadar Upazila; and MLT site, Pirganj of Rangpur district in the year of 2014. BARl Bt begun 1 was tested along with non- Bt variety to evaluate their comparative performance against brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB). There was no BSFB affected shoot and fruit was observed in BARI Bt begun 1 but surrounding non Bt begun plants were severely affected by BSFB insect. Population of other insect pests and natural enemies were normal in both varieties. Two trial plots were severely infected by bacterial wilt. The production of the rest of farmers varied from 1377 to 2640 kg from one bigha.

Objectives:

Objective of this study was to determine the performance of BARI Bt Begun field trials at Gangachachara, Rangpur Sadar Upazila and MLT site, Khalashpir, Pirgonj of Rangpur district.

Methodology:

The field trials of BARI Bt begun 1 were carried out at Gangachara, Rangpur Sadar Upazila and MLT site, Khalashpir, Pirgonj of Rangpur district during the year of 2014. Seedlings were transplanted during 12 to 16th February, 2014. BARI Bt Begun 1 was planted in the middle and the local check was planted at the periphery of the field maintaining the spacing of 100 cm x 80 cm. The plots were fertilized with N-P-K-S-Zn- Cowdung kg ha^-1@ 173-30-125-0-0-10000. Half of the cowdung was applied during land preparation. Remaining Cow dung, entire amount of TSP and 1/3 each of Urea and MoP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of Urea and MoP were applied in two equal installments at 21 and 35 days after transplanting. Plant protection measures were taken as required. Other intercultural operations were done when necessary. Fruits were collected at maturity stage.

BARI Bt begun 1 performed very well against Brinjal shoot and fruit borer whereas non Bt was highly infested. This technology will be very effective to reduce the indiscriminate use of insecticide.
