Performance of BARI Bt Brinjal 2 Under Farmers' Field Condition in Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial of BARI Bt Begun 2 was conducted at the selected 5 farmers' field of Gazipur district during the summer season of 2014 to see the performance. There was no infestation of brinjal fruit and shoot borer among the farmers' field. However, out of 5 trials, 4 were abandoned due severe infestation of wilt disease. One farmer Monsur Sarker of Kaliganj upazila harvested about 300 kg of Bt brinjal.

Objectives:

Objective of this study was to observe the performance of BARI Bt Brinjal 2 Under Farmers' Field Condition in Gazipur.

Methodology:

With the help of DAE, 5 farmers were selected from three upazilas of Gazipur district (two from Kaliganj, two from Sreepur and one from Gazipur Sadar upazila). The farmers were oriented on the cultivation of Bt brinjal through a training programme. The seedlings of BARI Bt begun 2 were planted from second week to third week of February 2014. A total of 1140 Bt seedlings were planted in one bigha plot. Local check was planted at the periphery of the field maintaining the spacing of 100 cm x 80 cm. Required amount of fertilizer were applied and plant protection measures were taken as required. Other intercultural operations were done when necessary.

The BARI Bt began 2 showed promising performance in managing brinjal shoot and fruit borer infestation though it was severely infected by wilt disease.
