A field experiment on assessment of varietal susceptibility, pest incidence and management of red banded caterpillar (Deanolis sublimbalis S Nellen), a new damaging insect pests of mango was conducted at Fruit Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh during March to June 2014 to find out the most susceptible or resistant mango variety, critical time of infestation and effective control measures against red banded mango caterpillar in a Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4, BARI Aam-8, Langra and Khirsapat were used for varietal susceptibility assessment and pest incidence study. Management study was evaluated on Langra variety. Among seven varieties assessed for susceptibility, Langra showed the most susceptible (7.93%) fruit infestation followed by BARI Aam-3 (5.35%). BARI Aam-1 (2.33%), BARI Aam-8 (2.93%) and BARI Aam-2 (2.98%) found relatively resistant to red banded caterpillar. and BARI Aam-4 (4.88%) and Khirsapat (4.74%) showed moderately susceptible to the same pest. The peak of red banded mango caterpillar was recorded in April (5.50%). Among five treatments the lowest infestation was observed in spray with ProfenofosQ+Cypermethrin (Shobicron 425EC) @ 1.0ml/L of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+clean cultivation (5.38%) followed by spray with Chlorantraniliprole+Thiamethoxam (Volium flexi300SC) @ 0.50ml/L of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+clean cultivation (5.42%).

To find out the most susceptible or resistant mango variety, critical time of infestation and effective control measures against red banded mango caterpillar.

The experiment was conducted at Fruit Farm, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur, Bangladesh during March to June 2014. The incidence of red banded caterpillar and peak time for infestation was monitored in BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4, BARI Aam-8, Langra and Khirsapat through counting from four fruiting branches of each quadrate. The efficacy of different control measures against red banded mango caterpillar was evaluated only on Langra variety following Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Five treatments were used in experiment viz. T1 = Clean cultivation (including cleaning of dead branches, leaves, debris and weeds (CC)), T2 = Spraying of ProfenofosQ+Cypermethrin (Shobicron 425EC) @ 1.0ml/L of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC, T3 = Spraying of Chlorantraniliprole+Thiamethoxam (Volium flexi 300SC) @ 0.50ml/L of water at 15 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC, T4 = Spraying of Flubendiamide (Belt 24WG) @ 0.5g/L of water at 10 days interval starting from marble stage of fruit+CC and T5 = Untreated control (without any interventions). Insecticides sprays were conducted in morning with the help of power pump sprayer. The number of healthy and infested fruits was counted during data collection. Total number of fruits per plant and infested fruit per plant was counted in-sito and per cent infestation was calculated. Data on incidence pattern of RBMC were recorded from non sprayed mango plants. The data recorded on different parameters were analyzed statistically after necessary transformations by using MSTAT-C software. ANOVA was made by F variance test and the differences between treatment means were compared by DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Marginal benefit cost ratio was calculated.

From the experiment it might be concluded that the peak of attack of red banded mango caterpillar (RBMC) in the April. Langra and BARI Aam-3 found most susceptible against RBMC. Among five management approaches spray with Flubendiamide (Belt 24WG)+clean cultivation would be the most effective approach against red banded mango caterpillar in respect of efficacy and yield. But considering benefit cost ratio, spraying of Chlorantraniliprole+Thiamethoxam (Volium flexi 300SC)+clean cultivation could also be suggested.
