Performance of Bt Brinjal 3 Under Farmers' Conditions in Jamalpur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted to observe the performance of BARI Bt Begun 3 under farmers' conditions was conducted at five locations viz islampur, Melandah, Sherepur Sadar, Nakla & Nalitabari of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts respectively during February 2014 to till to date. Among the five locations one was the best, another one was good, other one was bad and rest two were abandoned. Highest production was recorded in Islampur (2720 kg) followed by in Nakla, Sherpur (910 kg), Melandah (400 kg) and sherpur sadar(200 kg). Farmers sold Bt brinjal with labeling.

Objectives:

Objective of this study was to observe the performance of BARI Bt Begun-3 under farmers' field conditions.

Methodology:

Field trials of BARI Bt Begun-3 were conducted at five locations viz. Islampur, Melandah, Sherepur Sadar, Nakla & Nalitabari of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts respectively under the supervision of RARS, BARI, Jamalpur and DAE of Jamalpur & Sherpur districts during February 2014. Land area of each farmer was 1 bigha. Stable bleaching powder was applied @ 3 kg/bigha during land preparation prior to one month of transplanting preventing bacterial wilt disease. Brinjal seedlings were planted with a spacing of 1 m x 80 cm accommodating 1140 Bt brinjal plants & 140 non-Bt brinjal plant in each farmer. One row of non-Bt local cultivar was transplanted surrounding the Bt variety as boarder crop. The date of transplanting was 13.02.2014, 14.02.2014, 24.02.2014 & 11.03.2014 at Sherpur Sadar, Islampur, Melandah, Nakla and Nalitabari of Jamalpur & Sherpur districts respectively. Manures and fertilizers viz. cowdung 1822 kg, urea 37 kg, TSP 13 kg, MP 25 kg and Boric acid 1.25 kg were applied per bigha. Whole cowdung, TSP, MP and Boric acid were applied at the time of final land preparation. The urea was applied in three equal installments; one in 15 days after planting, another in fruiting stage and the last one in middle of fruit harvesting. Intercultural operations including weeding and mulching were done as and when necessary by the farmers. Plants were irrigated as per requirement.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the five locations one was the best, another one was good, other one was bad and rest two were abandoned. The BARI Bt Begun 3 showed very promising efficiency in managing brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) infestation. But crop management should be improved. BARI authorities have to think about the varieties & their optimum growing season and selecting those commercial local varieties which resistant to bacterial wilt disease and according to the farmers' preference.
