A comparative field trial on poly bag and nylon net (mosquito-net) barrier in controlling banana leaf and fruit beetle (Nodostoma viridipennis) was conducted at farmers’ field of Kapasia of Gazipur and Gobindagonj of Gaibandha during May to August 2013. Four treatments including untreated control were compared in a randomized complete block design with three replications on “Amritshagar” and “Champa” variety of banana. Both poly bag and nylon net barrier treatments showed best performance in comparison to farmers’ practice (insecticide spraying) and untreated controlled treatments. From the comparison trials it was evident that lowest infestation (3.91 and 4.57%) was recorded in poly bagging treatment which was statistically similar with nylon netting treatment (4.74 and 5.07%) compared to 17.91 and 19.68% in farmers’ practice and 27.14 and 29.47% in untreated control treatments in Kapasia and Gobindhagonj, respectively. The highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) (Tk.1.73/Tk and Tk 1.44/Tk.) was offered by poly bag and nylon net covering treatments over untreated control. As these techniques are non-toxic, non-hazardous to human health and the environment, therefore could be suggested for banana growers of Bangladesh.

The experiment was conducted to investigate a non-chemical and environmental friendly management approach for controlling Banana Leaf and Fruit Beetle in farmers' fields.

The study was conducted at the farmers’ field of Kapasia of Gazipur and Gobindagonj of Gaibandha districts. Farmers’ fields were selected on the basis of orchard size, having at least 200 banana plants. During selection, Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of the respective upazilla were provided necessary cooperation. A total of 6 demonstration trials were set (three demonstration trials in each upazilla) in the experimental sites. There were four treatments. Those were: T1= Bunch covered with perforated (30-40) poly bag @ 1/bunch; T2= Bunch covered with Nylon net (16 mesh) @ 1/bunch; T3= Farmers’ practice (only spraying of insecticides) and T4= Untreated control. Design of the study was randomized complete block design with three replications. The study was started by May and continued up to August, 2013. In each upazilla, three demonstration trials were set by 1st to 3rd week of May, 2013. Therefore, 100 poly bags and 100 nylon nets were supplied to each farmer with necessary directions. The covering materials were collected from local market of Gazipur and Dhaka. The demonstration trials were done on “Amritshagar” and “Champa” variety of banana. Number of plant per hectare was 2,500. Data on healthy and infested fruits at harvest, market price, costs of pest management, farmers’ opinion and weather data were collected. The collected data and information was compiled, analyzed following Prodhan and Noman (2011), marginal benefit cost was analysis following Islam and Karim (1991). The mean were separated using LSD test (P=0.05).

In Kapasia, percent finger infestation was recorded the lowest (3.91%) in poly bagging treated bunches which was statistically similar with nylon netting plants (4.74%) followed by farmers’ practice (17.91%). The highest finger infestation was occurred in untreated control bunches (27.14%). Accordingly, the highest (85.59%) infestation reduction was calculated in poly bagging bunches followed by nylon netting bunches (82.54%) over untreated control bunches. Similar trend was also observed in case of Gobindagonj study. Yield of healthy bunch per hectare also vary among the treatments studied. In Kapasia, it was the highest (bunch 2402/ha) followed by nylon net (bunch 2382/ha), farmers’ practice (bunch 2052/ha) and the lowest (bunch 1822/ha) in untreated control bunches. Though, the yield of Gobindagonj was little bit lower than that of Kapasia but follow the similar trend . Economic analysis showed significant variations among different treatments. However, the highest (1.73 Tk/Tk) was offered by poly bagging treatments followed by nylon netting treatments (1.44 Tk/Tk) over untreated control  which were more than 5 and 4-times higher than of the farmers’ practice (spray insecticides). Both poly bag and nylon net were almost equally effective for controlling banana leaf and fruit beetle in the field and economic for banana farmers. Therefore, it could be suggested for banana farmers of Bangladesh.
