Professor
Department of Medicine, BAU, Mymensingh-2202.

There are about 33.55 million goats in Bangladesh. These goats can significantly play an important role in the economic well being of the resource-poor farmer. The goats in Bangladesh are mainly utilized for meat purposes, although goat milk is used some extent for human consumption. The goats are also important for good quality leathers. Brucellosis in goats is mostly caused by Brucella meltensis. Brucellosis has been reported in goats from different parts of the world. However, in Bangladesh only one study is the reported the presence of Brucellosis in caprine and prevalence of caprine Brucellosis were determined 23.64% at Modhupur in Tangail, 31.82% at Bhaluka in Mymensingh, 34.00% in Manikgang district and 16.66% in BAU campus and adjacent villages by Plate Agglutination test (PAT) (Rahman et. Al., 1988). Despite the presence of large population of goats in Bangladesh no further work has been carried out on Brucellosis. The objective of this study was, therefore to study the seroprevalence of Brucellosis through Rose Bengal test in goats and to determine the relationship of some reproductive factors and impact of husbandry practices in Bangladesh. 3-5 ml blood samples were collected from 300 sexually mature female goats of BAU nutrition farm, BAU adjacent villages, some villages of Ishwargonj upazila, Mymensingh and some villages of Dhamrai upazila, Dhaka. Serum were separated and prepared for Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and RBT were conducted according to the procedure of Baek et al., (2000). The seroprevalence was determined by considering the total number of animals tested and positive reactors using the formula given by Thrusfield, 1995. Sera from 300 goats were tested by Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBT). Higher prevalence rate (10%, n=30) was found in BAU Veterinary clinic while lower prevalence (0%) was recorded in BAU adjacent villages (n=50) and Dhamrai upazila (n=30). Aged, aborted, goats of retained placenta and abnormal uterine discharge are more prevalent to brucellosis. Collectively reared, goats of concrete floor housed and free range feeding goats are also more prevalent to brucellosis.

1. To study the seroprevalence of brucellosis using Rose Bengal test. 2. To study the epidemiology. 3. Isolation and characterization of Brucella organism. 4. Treatment and control of brucellosis. 5. To determine the relationship of some reproductive factors. 6. To impact of husbandry practices in Bangladesh.

The results of the study was revealed that the overall prevalence of brucellosis in goat was 2.33% (7 goats found to positive among 300 goats). Age wise prevalence of brucellosis revealed that order goats (3.33%, n-90) are more susceptible to brucellosis and in goats of 6 months to 18 months of age (n=60) has no positive reactor. Brucellosis was more common in goats attended in BAU Veterinary clinic (10%, n=30) for treatment, then villages of Ishwargonj upazila (1.05%, n=190) and no positive goats were found in Dhamrai upazila (n=30). The prevalence of brucellosis was more in aborted or previously aborted goats (20%, n=15) than that of non aborted goats (0.7%, n=285) and a significant relationship existed between prevalence of brucellosis and abortion. Brucellosis was more in goats having history of retention of placenta (13.33%, n=15) than that of no retention of placenta (1.05%, n=285) and Brucellosis was more in goats having history of retention of placenta (13.33%, n=15) and brucellosis and retention of placenta is significantly related. Prevalence of brucellosis was more in animal having abnormal uterine discharge (10%, n=10) than no abnormal uterine discharge (1.38%, n=290) and statistically significant association found between brucellosis and abnormal uterine discharge. Collectively reared goats are found to be more prevalent to brucellosis (2%, n-50) that individually and rearing system. Goats housed in concrete floor was more prevalent to brucellosis (2%, n-50) than that of earthen floor (1.6%, n=250) but no significant relation existed among floor type and brucellosis. Brucellosis was more in goats grazed in free range system (1.72%, n=290) than that of zero grazing or stall feeding (0%, n=10) and no significant relation was found among grazing types and brucellosis.
