Efficiency of Ipns-based Fertilizer on Tomato Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at MLT site Sunamganj during 2007-08 and 2008-09 to find out the proper and economic nutrient management package(s) for tomato production. Four nutrient management packages viz. IPNS basis with poultry manure, IPNS basis with cowdung, soil test basis (STB) fertilizer dose for high yield goal as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide, 2005 and farmers' practice. The hybrid tomato variety Epoc was used in this experiment. Results showed that IPNS treatments gave better fruit yield (91.65 t ha^-1 to 85.13 t ha^-1) of tomato compared to STB fertilizer (72.51 t ha^-1) and farmers' practice (68.32 t ha^-1). Higher gross return and gross margin were obtained from IPNS with poultry manure followed by IPNS with cowdung. Benefit cost ratio was also higher in IPNS based fertilizer due to higher gross return and lower fertilizer cost.

Objectives:

To find out the proper nutrient management packages and to determine the economic dose of fertilizer for tomato production under irrigated medium high land condition at the MLT site, Sunamganj under AEZ 20.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted on farmers' field of multi-location testing site (MLT), Sunamganj during Rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. The soil of the experimental area was loam in texture with organic matter content (1.85%). Soil was acidic (pH 5.9) having total nitrogen content 0.1%, available P 7.67 ug/g, exchangeable K 0.14 meq/100g soil and available S 14.18 ug/g. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with six dispersed replications. Unit plot size was 6 x 8m² . Fertilizers were applied as per treatment based on soil analysis and BARC Fertilizer Recommendation Guide 2005. The levels of the fertilizers were selected on the basis of target yield as per FRG'2005. The fertilizers levels used by the farmers (average of 20 farmers) were considered as farmers' practice (FP). Nutrient supply per 1000 kg organic materials was 4.5, 1.5 and 5.0 kg NPK from cowdung and 11.5, 10.5 and 7.0 kg NPK from poultry manure. Moisture content of cowdung was 35% and that of poultry manure was 55%. Four different fertilizers packages were tested and the treatments were T₁ = Soil test basis (STB) inorganic fertilizer for high yield goal (HYG); T₂ = IPNS basis fertilizer management for HYG with cowdung (CD); T₃ = IPNS basis fertilizer management for HYG with poultry manure (PM) and T₄ = Farmers' practice (FP). N, P, K and S were applied through urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. The entire amount of organic manures, P, S and half of K were applied during final land preparation as per treatments. Entire quantity of urea and remaining K were applied in ring method in two equal splits at 21 and 35 days after transplanting of tomato seedlings. In first year 30 days old seedlings of hybrid tomato variety Epoc were transplanted during 24-28 November, 2007 and in second year 30 days old seedlings of the same variety were transplanted during 19-23 November, 2008. Seedlings were transplanted at spacing of 75 x 50 cm². The crop was irrigated 6-7 times. Intercultural operations such as weeding, pruning, staking and pest control were done as and when needed to maintain the normal crop growth properly. Nutrient uptake by tomato was calculated on the basis of yield following FRG'2005 as 50 t ha^-1 fruit yield of tomato nutrient uptake for NPKS were 140- 29-158-30 kg ha^-1, respectively. Ten plants from each plot were selected randomly for data collection. Data on plant height, primary branches, yield and yield attributes recorded properly. Plant height was measured from ground level to tip of the largest stem. The data were analyzed for ANOVA and the means were separated following Least Significant Different Test. Economic analysis was done for gross return and benefit cost ratio over farmers' practice for different fertilizer packages.

Achievement/Findings:

From this study, it is apparent that the treatment T₃ (IPNS with PM) and T₂ (IPNS with CD) are superior to other fertilizer management packages in respect of fruit yield, gross return and gross margin for tomato. The highest BCR (11.47) was found in T₃ treatment followed by T₂ (9.66). The treatment farmers' practice had the lowest BCR (8.10).
