Adaptive Trials with Low Water Required White Grain Hybrid Maize in Three Different Locations

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Adaptive trials to validate low water required white grain hybrid maize's performance was conducted under normal irrigated and one-irrigation conditions at Barisal, Khagrachari, and Gazipur3 locations with five locally developed hybrids and a check Shuvra. The genotypes under one-irrigated condition showed significant variations among them for the traits studied. Ranges of entry mean over locations for days to tasseling and silking were from 91 to 101 days and 97 to 108 days, respectively. None of the hybrids showed earliness than check Shuvra. Plant and ear height ranged from 173 to 189 cm and 64 to 74 cm, respectively. The lowest plant and ear height was observed in the hybrid P₂×P₆. Yield showed significant variations among the entries under one-irrigated condition, which was ranged from 5.53 to 6.9 t/ha. It is obvious that all the entries showed higher result for all the traits in Barisal and it could be conclude that Barisal was highly suitable for hybrid maize cultivation under one-irrigated condition followed by Gazipur. In case of irrigated condition except plant height all the traits showed significant variations among the entries in respect of location. Ranges of entry mean over locations for days to tasseling and silking were from 89 to 95 days and 94 to 100 days, respectively. Q₁×Q₂showed identical with check Shuva for days to tasseling and silking. One-irrigated condition delayed the flower emergence and enlarged the gap between days to tasseling and silking, lower plant height, ear height and yield. Grain yield difference between normal irrigated and non-irrigated condition over locations mean was highest and lowest for the hybrids Q₈×Q₆and P₂×P₆, respectively. Thus, P₂×P_{6 ^{could be found}}more stable over locations, but its yield potentiality was low, while P₁×P₄and P₁×P₇had high average yield potentiality. The hybrid Q₈×Q_{6 was found} better over locations for irrigated condition only.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Barisal, Khagrachari, and Gazipur during rabi 2014-15. The materials were sown in two sets (i) One set- following normal irrigation practice at three locations during rabi 2014-15 and (ii) another set- only single irrigation at flowering stage. Five locally developed white grain quality protein maize hybrids along with one open pollinated white grain check variety Shuvra were evaluated in this study. Experimental seeds were sown on November 2014. Experimental design was RCBD with two replications for each set. Spacing was 60 cm × 20 cm between row to row and hill to hill, respectively. After seedling emergence one healthy plant per hill was kept after proper thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 55, 110, 40 and 5 kg/ha at N, P, K, S and Zn, respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as required. Data on days to pollen shedding, days to silking and grain yield were recorded on whole plot basis. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant and ear height. The grain yield (ton ha^-1) data was assessed and corrected to 12% moisture.

Achievement/Findings:

None of the hybrids showed earliness than check Shuvra. Plant and ear height ranged from 205 to 221 cm and 86 to 95 cm, respectively. The lowest plant and ear height was observed in the hybrid Q₈×Q₆ and P₁×P₄, respectively. Grain yield showed significant variations among the entries under irrigated condition over locations, which was ranged from 9.62 to 13.38 t/ha. The highest yielded hybrid over locations mean was Q₈×Q₆.
