Argulosis in Farm Fishes of Mymensingh Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted on fish louse, Argulus infestation in fish farms of Mymensingh region during the period for July 2007 and June 2009 in different Upazilas of Mymensingh district. Specimens of Argulus were collected for their identification and morphological studies. Some tissue samples were collected from the infested fish and preserved in 10% buffered formalin for histopathology. Infestation occurred through the year but May to August was the most potential season for Argulus infestation. Government fish farms were more infested than private farms. Farm owners frequently use banned chemicals (Sumithion, melathion, dipterex, limper, pyrethrum and troclorphon at 0.25-0.50 ppm) in their farms for treatment of argulosis. Indian major carps were more susceptible for argulosis. Other fishes in the farms such as silver carp, pangus, punti, chital, big head, tilapia etc. were also found to be infected. Brood fish are more susceptible for Argulus infestation. The infected site on fish body was the base of pectoral and pelvic fins. The rate of infestation in carps was about 60-80% and 20-40% in other fishes. The mortality of fishes due to argulosis was about 3-5% in govt. farms and 0-2% in private farms. However, new fish farmers (3-5 years experienced) were not aware with the fish lice infestation in farms. Collected specimens of argulus were critically studied for their morphology. Accordingly, a new species Argulus spinosus has been proposed for its acceptance and sent for its publication. The first feeding sites of argulids were often marked by haemorrhagic spots. They appear as craters formed by hyperplasia of epidemis at margin of the wounds. Histologically, crates may be restricted to the epidermis, or may penetrate through to the stratum spongiosum of the dermis and even to stratum compactum beneath. The dermis became oedematous. Mucous and club ells were absent from epidermis.

Objectives:

1. Study the taxonomic characters with systematic importance and identification of Argulus.

2. Histopathological study of diseased fish caused by Argulus.

Methodology:

For the study, collection of samples of both fish louse and fish will be made by several field visits to different parts of Mymensingh district. The investigation will be conducted from two years during 2007 – 2008 information will be noted. The speciments will be preserved in alcohol/formalin or F. A. A. The fish sample or tissue will be collected from live fish and will be preserved in 10% buffer formalin for histological purpose. Histopathological works will be done after fixation in neutral buffered formalin processing of automatic tissue processor, cutting sections and finally staining in haemtoxylene and eosin. Both taxonomic works of argulus and histopathological works will be done in the laboratory. Reports of the study will be prepared at the end of the work.
