The project was carried at producing rice cum vegetable in the same plot. The experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh during the period from December 2003 through May 2004 with a view to observing the performance of different species of trellis grown vegetables on the ails of boro rice cv. BRRI dhan29. The treatments included in this experiment were nine crop combinations viz. rice alone (C0), rice + yard long bean (C1), rice + bitter gourd (C2), rice + bottle gourd (C3), rice + ridge gourd (C4), rice + Cucumber (C5), rice + snake gourd (C6), rice + white gourd (C7) and rice + Indian Spinach (C8) and three types of width of plots (while the plot length remained constant) viz. 3 × 3 m2 (W1), 3 × 5 m2 (W2) and 3 × 7 m2 (W3). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. All the vegetables were cultivated on the ails of rice and later these were given on to the results made with bamoo and plastic rope arrangements except Indian spinach. The results showed that crop combination exerted significant influence on number of effective tiller hill-1, number of filled grains panicle-1, and grain, straw and biological yields of rice while other characters remained unaffected. The highest grain yield (7.68 t ha-1) was produced from the control treatment (C0) and the lowest grain yield (5.78 t ha-1) obtained from rice + white gourd (C7) crop combination. Plot width showed significant effect on number of effective tillers hill-1, number of total tiller hill-1, number of filled grains panicle-1, and grain, straw and biological yields. The W3 plot width produced the highest grain yield (7.89 t ha-1) and the lowest grain yield (6.04 t ha-1) was obtained from W1 plot width. There was significant interaction between crop combination and plot width on number of effective tillers hill-1, number of filled grain panicle-1, and grain, straw and biological yields. In terms of vegetable production, the highest vegetable yield (25.14 t ha-1) was recorded from rice + bottle gourd (C3) and the lowest yield (2.32 t ha-1) was obtained from rice + yard long bean (C1) crop combination. Rice + bottle gourd (C3) gave the highest rice equivalent yield (31.51 t ha-1) and the lowest rice equivalent yield (7.68 t ha-1) was obtained from rice alone treatment (C0). The highest vegetable (10.65 t ha-1) and rice equivalent yields (16.21 t ha-1) were obtained from W1 plot width and the lowest vegetables yield (6.49 t ha-1) and rice equivalent yield (13.96 t ha-1) were obtained from W3 and W2 plot width, respectively. The interactions between crop combination and plot width for vegetable yield and rice equivalent yields were significant. The highest vegetable yield (29.28 t ha-1) was recorded from C3W1 treatment combination and the lowest vegetable yield (1.93 t ha-1) was obtained from C1W3. On the other hand, the highest rice equivalent yield (34.28 t ha-1) was obtained from C3W1 and the lowest rice equivalent yield (6.72 t ha-1) was obtained from C0W1. In vegetable cultivation with boro rice, the highest values of gross return (Tk. 280070 ha-1), net return (Tk. 210066 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (3.00) were obtained from C3W1. The lowest gross return (Tk. 60850 ha-1), net return (Tk. 23,890 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (0.38) were recorded respectively from the crop combinations C0W1, and C1W1.

  Variety and Species

1) To select the most suitable and adaptive type of vegetables from among the different vegetable crops that could be reaised on ails of growing rice crops. 2) To increase the overall production of vegetables and rice from the same plot of land at a time. 3) To observe the relative profitability of rice + vegetables production compared to sole rice production.

Arrangements will be made to produce trellis vegetables on the ails of both T. aman and Boro rice crops. For this, rice crops will be established in both the seasons. Several vegetables, which are generally cultivated by providing trellis or stakes, would be selected for experimentation. The important aspects of investigation would include a) The vegetable species those could be grown in trellis on the ails of rice plots b) the dimension of the ails appropriate for production of vegetable species c) the size of the trellis which could support vegetable production with having little affect to rice crop and d) The slant of the trellis, which will have little or insignificant affect on the rice crops grown underneath.

The project was initiated on 01.10.2003 with the objective to produce rice cum vegetable in the same plot. The reporting year an experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh to examine the performance of selected vegetable species on the ails of T. Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan41. The trellis grown snake gourd did not significantly reduce rice yield compared to that obtained from sole rice plot. On the other hand, significant rice yield reductions were achieved with bottle gourd, white gourd and yard long bean. However, seed yield reductions due to trellis grown vegetable crops were just marginal. The results showed that width of ail exhibited significant influence on grain and straw yields along with vegetable and rice equivalent yields. The highest yields of both grain (4.55 tha-1) and straw (5.15 tha-1) were produced from the A4 (55cm) treatment with the lowest grain (3.96 tha-1) and straw (4.63 tha-1) yields received from A1 (40 cm) treatment. In vegetable production with rice crop, A4 (55 cm) and A3 (50 cm) width of ails gave similar but high vegetable yields. These two treatments were found equally good terms of producing higher rice equivalent yields. The probable cause might be that root growth and development of vegetable crops were much better in broader ails of 50-55 cm than that of narrower (40-45 cm) ones.
