Dr. Zoarder Faruque Ahmed
Professor
Department of Fisheries Management, BAU, Mymensingh-2202

The small indigenous fish species Chela cachius (Hamilton Buchanan, 1822) belongs to the family Cyprinidae locally known as chhep chela is commercially important and caught in a large quantity from various inland waters in Bangladesh. The research project was proposed to determine age and growth, recruitment pattern, spawning period, frequency of spawning, length of spawning season and fecundity, and both natural and fishing mortality with management suggestions to conserve the stock of the valuable fish species using fish samples collected from a large perennial waterbody at or near BAU, Mymensingh. A total of 2396 specimens from 12 samples were collected from the river Old Brahmaputra for a period of one year from 4 July 2005 to 4 June 2006. Among the total fish, 1180 were male and 1216 were female, and the sex ratio statistically did not differ from the expected 1:1 ratio. The standard length of male ranged from 29 to 61 mm and the body weight ranged from 0.29 to 2.76 g. The standard length of female ranged from 31 to 63 mm and the body weight ranged from 0.32 to 3.47 g. The Old Brahmaputra chela population suffered high mortality during the study period. The natural and fishing mortalities for male were 1.92 and 1.45 per year, and for female was 2.16 and 1.27 per year accordingly. The maximum yield per recruit obtained for male was 0.37 g at fishing mortality of 3.0 per year, and that for female was 0.44 g at fishing mortality of 3.6 year. The biomass analyses, however, suggested that male attained about 912 g at 7th month while female 1445 g at the same age relatively if 1000 individuals recruited to the C. cachius stock in the river Old Brahmaputra. A simple guide for fisheries management of this important fish species was prepared incorporating the findings obtained from this study.

1. To determine age and growth of chela cachius in the perennial ponds/reservoirs;

2. To determine the recruitment pattern, length frequency, size variation in respect of pond productivity;

3. To determine the spawning period, frequency of spawning, length of spawning season and fecundity of the species;

4. To determine their survival strategies in response to fishing pressure and natural mortality;

5. To suggest the management measures towards sustained production in the rural ponds and in the open water habitats.

The main Methodology of the research Project have been given below: The spawning season coccurred once in a year in spring and the birth date was assumed on 1 February 2004 in this study. the growth equations provided by three models each for male and femele were as Lt = 66.45 [1-ex- {0.047(t+11.67)}] and Lt = 67.56[1-exp{-0.034 (t+22.75)}] for vaon Bertalanffy model; Lt = 65.42 exp [-exp{-0.059 (t+4.03)}] and Lt = m66.30 exp [-exp {-0.043 (t+12.88)}] for Gompertz m9odel; and Lt= 64.43/[1+exp{-0.073(t+1.13)}] and Lt = 65.39/[1+exp{-0.052(t+6.13)}] for Robertson model respectively. Among a total of 2,400 fish 1172 were male and 1228 were female showing a sex ratio of 1:1.05 male; female, which did not deviate significantly from partly.Procedure to be followed in achieving stated objectives: To determine age and growth of chela cachius in the perennial ponds/reservoirs; the recruitment pattern, length frequency, size variation in respect of pond productivity; the spawning period, frequency of spawning, length of spawning season and fecundity of the species; their survival strategies in response to fishing pressure and natural mortality and the management measures towards sustained production in the rural ponds and in the open water habitats. Fish samples were collected monthly from the perennial lake located in the field laboratory of Faculty of fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January to December 2004. Data collection e. Data analysis.
