Reverse Supply Chain Process as Environmental Sustainability in the Poultry Industry of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Environmental sustainability is one of the established concepts for the industry to manage resources for present and future generation. This valued concept make beneficiary to its follower in terms of reputation and gaining profit. Attention in supply chain management has progressively amplified since the 1980s when firms sawed the benefits of mutual relationships within and beyond their own organization. Reverse supply chain one of the wing of supply chain which deals with product return, waste reduce, recycle and reuse etc. These all related to environment issues which are getting more attention to business and mass people. This is why, researcher have chosen this dynamic area based on particular case industry to observe how reverse supply chain (RSC) can be used to protect and improve environmental hazards. The objectives of this paper was twofold. First, it offers a literature review on sustainability along with environment sustainability and supply chain in conjunction with reverse supply chain issue. Second, it develops a conceptual sustainable environment friendly model based on reverse supply chain theory. Later, model has been fitted in simulation model. In this paper, poultry industry of Bangladesh used as case. The model was developed by taking in-depth interview from experienced poultry executives. The paper ultimately focused on sustainability (only dealt with environmental issue) along with reverse supply chain management in the hub of poultry industry of Bangladesh. Future research in this area was also highlighted in this study.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to evaluate the environmental sustainability and reverse supply chains based on existing poultry industry in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study covered literature review on sustainability along with environment and reverse supply chains. This paper used observation tool to generate sustainable model for Bangladesh poultry in light of environmental benefits and impacts. Both primary and secondary data and information had been used in this study. Primary information was collected from September 2010, mainly through in-depth interviews with the sample respondents. The total respondents were four different executives from a reputed poultry industry in Bangladesh. These respondents were nominated based on their extensive knowledge and experiences in this particular industry. The positions of those four executives were Director, Executive Director, Production Manager and Hatchery Manager from the case industry. Secondary information like literature were collected from different published documents such as referral journal and conference paper, survey reports, statistical yearbooks and various reports. This study followed research paradigm of positivist ontology, empirical epistemology and quantitative methodology based on real supply chain cases of poultry process. Design science methodology had been chosen for this study. Design science is concerned with "devising artifacts to attain goals (Simon 1969). March and Smith focused on the two main activities of design science research (DSR): firstly, building an artifact and evaluating it; secondly, design science products are of four types, constructs, models, methods, and implementation (March and Smith 1995). In this research, artifacts used in simulation modeling. Here, an artifact means design and develop soft or hard objects that can meet specific purpose and goal (Venable 2006, 2006). A simulation package of SIMUL8 used as a tool to analyse existing poultry processes in order to investigate the research objectives. Simulation as a research tool was used by various disciplines as diverse as cognitive science to develop models on emotion, cognition and social behaviour; economics to model people's economic behaviour; sociology to model social life and interactions among individuals within a particular society (Macal and North 2005). Simulation is an appropriate tool that can give the optimality of the sample process, so it was used to estimate the social, economic and environmental benefits from the existing poultry model based on case industry.

In conclusion, the concept of the reverse supply chain is very much related to environment protection and its sustainability. It is imperative for the farmers and stakeholders to protect their environment by utilizing poultry wastes. Moreover, this kind of process not only utilizes poultry wastes but also keep our environment intact for future generation. Furthermore, enhanced clean environment resulting from the implementation of the RSC concept will assist farmers with the prevention of common poultry diseases in their poultry industry as well.
