Influence of Grafting on Summer Tomato Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Influence of grafting on summer tomato production were tested against bacterial wilt during summer season of 2011 at HRC, BARI, Gazipur. Yield per plant when grafted with sysimbrifolium was lower (0.80 kg) than those of grafted with BARI Begun-8 (1.08 kg) and non grafted plant (1.25 kg). In this study no plants was found infected with bacterial wilt up to 60 day after sowing.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of grafting tomato onto a wild eggplant and BARI begun-8 for yield and bacterial wilt reaction.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at the experimental field of HRC, BARI, Gazipur, during summer season of 2011. For this study BARI begun-8 and S. sysimbrifolium were used as root stock while BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 as scion. Hundred grafted seedlings were produced with each root stock. Grafted seedlings as well as non-grafted tomato seedlings were transplanted in the main field on June 15 2011. Experimental design was RCB with three replications. Each replication consisted of 24 plants. Plants were spaced at 60 X 40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MP 250kg per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cowdung, entire TSP and half of the MP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MP and entire urea were applied in three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Irrigation, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when needed. It was reported that incidence of bacterial wilt disease of tomato in the farmers field at Dhunat upzilla of Bogra was severe. Therefore another study comprising grafted tomato with S. sysimbrifolium and non-grafted seedlings were evaluated at farmers field of Dhunat upzilla of Bogra District under farmer’s field condition during May 2011 to September 2011. This study was conducted in RCB design with three replications. Each replication comprising half decimal of land consisted 100 plants. The crop was protected from heavy rain providing transparent poly-tunnel. Two types of pesticide namely Maladan and Bavistin were sprayed by the farmers for four times at 12 days interval to protect the crop from insects and diseases infestation. Data were recorded on days to flower, days to harvest, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield per half decimal land. Incidence of virus and wilting of plants was also recorded at 60, 75 and 90 days after sowing.
