Development of Ipm Package for Summer Tomato Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on IPM package for summer tomato production was conducted in the farmer’s field of Dhunat, Bogra during the summer season of 2011-12. The maximum number of fruits per plant (27.33) was recorded from the plant grown under IPM production system. The corresponding fruit yield per plant was also higher (1.18 kg) in the plants of IPM production system than that of the plants of non-IPM production (1.0 kg) system (farmers practice). A wide variation in yield per unit area was recorded between IPM and non-IPM production system. It was 181.0 kg of tomato harvested from one decimal of land when grown under IPM production system while it was only 76.0 kg of tomato when grown under non-IPM production system. More than 55% plants of the farmer’s practice were wilted at 90 DAS caused tremendous yield loss while it was only 5% in IPM tunnel.

Objectives:

To study the effect of IPM package on summer tomato production in the farmer’s field.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at the farmer’s field of village Mathpara, Upzila: Dhunat under the district of Bogra during the summer season of 2011. Three farmers were selected for this study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Each farmer was considered as one replication. The crop was grown under IPM package and Farmer’s practice (non-IPM production system). Therefore, there are two treatments (1) IPM Package and (2) Farmer’s practice (Non-IPM). One decimal of land was allotted for each replication. IPM package consisted of grafted tomato seedling of BARI hybrid tomato 4 (grafted on Solanum sisymbriifolium), use of tricho-compost, spraying neem oil and use of sticky yellow trap. Under IPM package, the land was ploughed well mixing with tricho-compost at the rate of 3kg/decimal and along with cattle dung and other recommended fertilizers. Grafted seedlings were transplanted in raise bed at 60 cm x 40 cm distance between row to row and plant to plant, respectively on June 6, 2011. Two hundred plants were accommodated in each tunnel.Two yellow sticky traps were placed in each bed to trap insects. Neem oil solution was also sprayed four times at 10 days interval. The crop was protected from rain providing poly tunnel as of prescribed design. Under farmers practice, the field was ploughed well mixing with cow dung and other recommended fertilizers. Thirty days old seedlings of BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 were transplanted in the raise bed at 60 X0 cm distance between row to row and plant to plant, respectively. Therefore, there were 200 plants in each tunnel. The crop was protected from heavy rain providing transparent poly tunnel. Two types of pesticide namely Maladan and Bavistin were sprayed by the farmers for four times at 12 days interval to protect the crop from insects and diseases infestation. Ten plants were randomly selected from each replication for data collection. Data were recorded on days to flower, days to harvest, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield per decimal land. Incidence of virus and wilting of plants was also recorded at 60, 75 and 90 days after sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicated that, IPM system comprising grafting technology is very much essential for tomato production during summer. The highest % wilt infection was recorded from the farmer’s field of farmer-III and it was 75 % at 90 day after sowing. Considering the effect of IPM practice consists of grafted tomato seedling, use of tricho-compost, spraying of neem oil may be suggested for better yield and safe tomato production in the wilt prone areas of Bangladesh.
