Effect of Variety and Support System on the Growth and Yield of Country Bean in Hilly Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during 2011-12 to find out the effect of variety and support system on the growth and yield of country bean in hilly region. Six treatment combination consisting of two variety viz. sitakundu sheem and BARI sheem-4 and three support system viz. bamboo stick, bamboo top and bamboo macha were used. The yield and yield component of two varieties were significantly differing on the basis of support system. The variety sitakundu sheem with bamboo stick gave the highest yield (14.87 t/ha) followed by bamboo top (12.49 t/ha) and lowest (9.30 t/ha) was observed with bamboo macha. In case of variety BARI seem-4 with bamboo macha gave the highest yield (17.61 t/ha) followed by bamboo top (13.93 t/ha) and lowest (10.93 t/ha) was observed with bamboo stick. Medium result was found in bamboo top in case of two varieties.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable combination of variety and support system for proper growth and higher yield of country bean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station Raikhali, Rangamati Hill District during the period of 2011-12 to find out the effect of variety and support system on the growth and yield of two varieties of country bean in the hilly region. The experimental field belongs to AEZ 29 and the soil was piedmont plain having medium loamy to moderately fine textured (sandy clay loam) (Zahirul, 1991) with low water holding capacity. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m × 3m. Six combination of treatment consisting of two varieties viz. Sitakundu sheem and BARI sheem-4 and three support system viz. bamboo stick, bamboo top and bamboo macha were used in the study. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 10 ton Cowdung, 60 kg Urea, 200 kg TSP and 150 kg MP per hectare. Half of the Cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The rest of Cowdung, entire quantity of TSP and half of each urea and MP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of Urea and MP were applied as top dressing after 30 days of planting. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigations were done when necessary. Data were recorded on days to 1st flowering, days to first harvest and yield and yield contributing characters.

Achievement/Findings:

The variety BARI sheem-4 gave higher yield with the supporting system bamboo macha and Sitakundu sheem gave the higher yield with bamboo stick. Medium result was found with bamboo top in case of both varieties.
