Induction of Mungbean Mutants with Altered Source and Sink Capacity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mungbean cv. MB246 was subjected to five doses of sodium azide (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.70 and 1.0%) and five doses of ethanemethyl sulphonate (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0%) respectively. Seeds were sown at BINA farm, Mymensingh, BINA sub-station Jamalpur and Ishurdi. At maturity, selected plants were harvested and data on plant height, number of branches, seeds per plant and seed yield per plant were recorded. Both NaN₃ and EMS treatments increased plant height, number of branches and pods per plant but the effect was more pronounced in EMS induced mutants. EMS treatments increased seed yield per plant but NaN₃ induced mutants did show significant improvement of seed yield over MB246.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to find out mungbean mutants with higher translocation

Methodology:

Mungbean cv. MB246 was subjected to five doses of sodium azide (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.70 and 1.0%) and five doses of ethanemethyl sulphonate (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0%) respectively. For ach treatment, 1000 seeds were taken. The treated seeds were sown in lines 40 cm apart at Mymensingh. After germination no abnormality was observed in the M₁ generation (1992-1993) except delay in germination at higher doses. Two lower pods were collected from each plant at harvest and bulked treatment twice for M₆ population. M₂ plants were sown during 1993-94 summer season in lines 40 cm apart. For each treatment 4000 seeds were sown in each location e.g. Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Ishurdi. Plants were selected on the basis of peduncle thickness. Plants were harvested after the 1st set of pods were mature. From three locations, 411 plants were selected. In selected plants, more synchrony of pod maturation was observed.
