Grain Growth Study in Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were conducted during June to December 1992 and 1993 at BINA farm, Mymensingh. Four varieties of different grain size viz. TL (coarse), BR11 (medium), Binasail (medium) and Badshabhog were taken for study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Grain dry weight from anthesis to maturity was recorded at three day's interval. The values were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by standard error. Grain growth of the varieties showed a sigmoid pattern. All the varieties had an initial lag period of 6 days, after this a liner phase of 6-12 days followed by sigmoid phase. The coarse grain variety TL possessed the highest rate and duration. On the other hand Badshabhog showed the lowest rate and duration. Remaining varieties had the intermediate status.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to know the pattern of grain growth in relation to grain size of rice variety

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted during June to December 1992 and 1993 at BINA farm, Mymensingh. Four varieties of different grain size viz. TL (coarse), BR11 (medium), Binasail (medium) and Badshabhog were taken. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 2m and plants were spaced at 15 cm x 20 cm. Fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Seedlings at the age of 30 days were transplanted at different dates to manipulate flowering at time. At the time of anthesis 15 panicles of main tiller were tagged from each plot and single spikelet was randomly harvested at 3 days' interval up to the grain maturity (1992). Thirty panicles were selected and tagged randomly in each plot and harvested regularly at 3 days' interval up to the grain maturity (1993). Collected grains were dried in oven at 81^oC for 72 hours and weighed in micro balance and individual grain weight was obtained by taking at least 15 grains at a time. The values were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by standard error.

Achievement/Findings:

Grain growth period did not vary among the rice varieties having different grain size. However, rate of grain growth was dependent on the grain size, the rate being higher with larger grains.
