Comparative Morpho-physiological Studies of BINA-14-10-10 with Its Parents

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted during January to June 1994 at BINA farm, Mymensingh with a rice line BINA-14-10-10 along with its parents Iratom-24 and Pajam. The experiment was laid out randomized design with four replications. Data on number of tillers, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI), total dry matter (TDM), Crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), yield and yield components were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by LSD. BINA-14-10-10 had lower number of tillers throughout the ontogens than its parents Iratom-24 and Pajam. LAI of Iratom-24 and BINA-14-10-10 increased gradually up to 70 DAT. After this they declined gradually. On the other hand, LAI of Pajam increased up to 80 DAT, thereafter declined sharply. The highest CGR values were found at 70-80 DAT. Although the pattern of NAR of all the varieties were similar; but Iratom-24 and BINA-14-10-10 showed accelerated values at 70-80 DAT. The highest values for plant height, number of grains/panicle, panicles/hill, harvest index and grain yield/hill were Iratom-24 whereas TDM values were higher in Pajam and BINA-14-10-10. Crop duration was the highest in Pajam and the lowest in Iratom-24 and BINA-14-10-10 showed an intermediate status.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to evaluate the improvements in some morpho-physiological characters contributing to yield over its parent.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted during January to June 1994 at BINA farm, Mymensingh with a rice line BINA-14-10-10 along with its parents Iratom-24 and Pajam. The experiment was laid out randomized design with four replications. The unit plot size was 5 m x 3 m and the plants were spaced at 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended doses. Seedlings of 40 day old were transplanted @ one seedling/hill on February 9, 1994. Eight hills from each plot were harvested at regular interval of 10 days up to 90 days after transplanting (DAT) to collect data on number of tillers, leaf area, leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter (TDM). Other physiological parameters like crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) were calculated from the mean data of the leaf area and TDM. At maturity stage, 10 hills were harvested for data on yield components. Yield data were recorded from 4m² harvested area. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Rice line BINA-14-10-10 inherited some good characters of its parents e.g. NAR, less sterility of tillers, less crop duration etc. Because of lesser leaf area accounted by its lower number of tillers could not produce higher CGR and biomass. It indicated that in the advanced line suitable cross combination was not achieved.
