Induction of Lentil Mutants with Altered Phenological Development Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lenlil line L-5 was treated with five doses of sodium azide (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.70 and 1.0%) and five doses of ethanemethyl sulphonate (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0%) respectively. Seeds were sown at BINA farm, Mymensingh, BINA sub-station and Ishurdi. At maturity, selected plants were harvested and data on plant height, number of branches, seeds per plant and seed yield per plant were recorded. Both NaN₃ and EMS treatments increased plant height, number of branches, pods per plant and seed yield per plant but the effect was more pronounced in EMS induced mutants.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to find out lentil mutants for high yield and synchrony in maturation

Methodology:

Seeds of L-5, a photoinsensitive lentil were treated with five doses of sodium azide (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.70 and 1.0%) and five doses of ethanemethyl sulphonate (0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0%) respectively. For ach treatment with sodium azide (NaN₃), 6500 seeds were taken and for ethanemethyl sulphonate (EMS), 10,000 seeds were taken. The treated seeds were sown in lines 30 cm apart. Germination was delayed specially in high doses. No abnormality was observed in the M₁ plants. Few pods from lower branch of each plant were collected at maturity and bulked treatment wise in the year 1992-1993 at Mymensingh. M₂ plants were grown in 1993-94 at Mymensingh and Ishurdi in lines 30 cm apart. In each line there were 150 plants in 40 lines for each treatment in both the locations. Thus, selection was made out of 60,000 plants at every location. In all, 682 plants were identified on the days to first flowering (50-60 days). Early and late flowering plants out of this range were not selected. M₂ plants showed a lot of variation in flowering and other characters. The mutants also included some abnormal types such as sterile rosette, prostrate, trailing etc.
