The main purpose of the study is to find out benefits of performing Optimum Harvesting Model (OHM) in terms of cost activities into differently managed oxbow lakes. The duration of the study covered a period of over 48 months (4 years), financial years 2000-01 to 2003-04. Three Oxbow Lakes, Purakali, Avoynagar Upazilla as a Community Managed Oxbow Lake (CMOL); Morshina, Keshobpur Upazilla as a Privately Managed Oxbow Lake (PMOL) & Kathgora, Chowgacha upazilla as a Government Managed Oxbow Lake (GMOL) were taken on a randomly basis from same geographical distribution in Jessore district. The CMOL was taken as an experimental and the rest twos, PMOL & GMOL were taken as control water bodies. 6 carp species including 3 major carps (rohu, mrigal and catla) and 3 exotic carps (common, silver & grass) were taken into the study. Some physical and cost factors were involved for analyze the model. These included Fish Size (FS), Daily Income (DI), Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) and Recovery Rate (RR). Highest yield per unit area was observed in CMOL comparing to others. Result showed that fishermen of CMOL were fully involved into all decisional processes as stocking, harvesting and cost activities. Also they invested themselves and enjoyed full profit from there.

  1. To formulate a optimum harvesting model for sustainable development of CBFM in oxbow lakes.

Only the local fish market near Purakhali oxbow lake was monitored and was taken as fixed for the year 2003-04 for species wise market prices of fingerlings as well as carp yields in different sizes for each production year (2000-2001 to 2003-2004) for the studied oxbow lakes. Daily Income (DI), Gross Income (GI), Gross Production (GP) and Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) were calculated. DI (Tk/day) from the stocked carp sales were calculated by dividing Net Present Values (NPVs) with the rearing periods of the species. NPVs were calculated at an 8% interest rate per annum. Daily Income: DI= NPV/ RP Where, DI= Daily Income (Taka/day), NPV = Net Present Value and RP = Rearing Period in days. Gross Incomes of different lake fishing groups were achieved through multiplying gross productions with the average market prices of different sizes of carps at harvest. Gross Income: GI= GP X MP Where, GI= gross income (Taka); GP= Gross Production (kg) and MP= market price of fish specific for fish size and species. Multiplying the number of fingerlings stocked by the market prices of different carp yields followed by the recovery rates, gross productions of the oxbow lakes were found. Gross production: GP= NF X FS X RR/100, Where, GP= Gross Production (kg), NF= number of fingerlings stocked, FS= fish size at harvest (kg) and RR= recovery (%). Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was measured by per day total income (Tk.) divided by the total cost per day (Tk). Benefit cost ratio: BCR = DI/DTC Where, BCR = Benefit Cost Ratio, DI = Daily Income (Taka) and DTC = Daily Total cost (Taka). All the income and incurred costs were recorded timely in the prescribed financial formats and were summed up to find out the Daily Total Costs. For Purakhali and Kathgora oxbow lakes, financial information was collected and verified through cross checking audit reports of Aquaculture Development Project (AqDP) and Beel and Baor Fisheries Development Project as well as through different structured questionnaires. Total costs per day were calculated by adding up different costs divided by the number of rearing periods. For analyzing species-species interaction correlation matrix were used.

In CMOL (Purakhali oxbow lake) abundance of aquatic weeds is high than rest of the oxbow lakes. Therefore, inspite of being highly variable fishery, highest BCR was found for grass carp in CMOL (Purakhali oxbow lake). Whereas, for Mrigal lowest BCR was observed in CMOL (Purakhali oxbow lake) followed by the other lakes. The other two species which gave moderately high per day income in a short rearing period are common carp and silver carp. These two species are followed by Catla and Rohu. The optimum benefit cost ratio varied between 6.1 and 10.5 depending on the fish species and their harvest size. The highest BCR (10.1-10.5) is obtained for Rohu at harvest size of 2.5-3.0 kg in 1068-1210 days. When BCR is the decisive factor, preferable harvest size for silver carp and Mrigal are 1.0 kg or 2.5-3.0 kg. When BCR is the decisive factor, preferable harvest size for silver carp and Mrigal are 1.0 kg, Rohu either 1.0 kg or 2.5-3.0 kg and the harvest size for common carp, Catla and grass carp are 2.5-3.0 kg.
