Demonstration Trials of BARI Hybrid Maize in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat Districts Under Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The demonstration trials with varying land areas were conducted with BARI hybrid maize 7 and BARI hybrid maize 9 at farmer’s field in four different northern districts viz. Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat under IAPP project for showing the performance of BARI maize hybrids and recommended technologies and also to popularize the varieties to the farmers in these areas during rabi 2014-15. The crop was grown using recommended management technologies. Grain yield was recorded from demonstration trials plot and farmers cultivated neighboring plots. Overall grain yield of BARI hybrid maize 9 ranged from 7.3 to 9.2 t/ha in the trial areas. Among the four districts, the highest average grain yield (9.05 t/ha) was obtained in Rangpur. Though higher average yield (8. 47 t/ha) was obtained from BARI hybrid maize 9, but it was identical with the farmer’s cultivated variety NK 40 (7.78 t/ha) and Sunshine (7.24 t/.ha). Objectives:

The main objective of demonstration is to show the performance of the variety and recommended technologies and also to show the farmers the fact that yield gap between research plot and farmers fields

Methodology:

Two hybrid maize variety viz. BARI hybrid maize 7 and BARI hybrid maize 9 were demonstrated in 40, 50 and 100 decimal blocks in farmers field at Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts during rabi 2014-15 under the Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project (IAPP). The demonstration trials were sown in Rangpur from 8 to 26 December, in Kurigram from 17 to 31 December, in Nilphamari from 4 to 25 December and in Laimonirhat from 16 to 30 December. There were sixty four demonstrations in four districts of which 40 demonstration trials conducted each with 40 decimal lands with BARI hybrid maize 9 and 16 trials each of 50 decimal blocks with BARI hybrid maize 7. The rest 8 trials were demonstrated each of 100 decimal large blocks with BARI hybrid maize 9. Equally the trials were distributed in the four districts. The crop was grown using recommended management technologies. Observations were recorded on grain yield, maturity and plant height from demonstration and neighboring farmers’ plots cultivated other commercial hybrids. The overall opinion of farmers about BARI hybrid maize was also taken into consideration as an important suggestion.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant variation was observed for grain yield followed by plant height. Data showed that BARI hybrid maize 9 produced average higher yield (8.47 t/ha) but non-significant performance with BARI hybrid maize 7 (8.08 t/ha) and other two commercial hybrids Sun shine (7.24 t/ha) and NK 40 (7.78 t/ha) (variety cultivated by neighboring farmers). BARI hybrid maize 9 was the tallest variety. All the varieties matured identically around 140 days. Among the locations, BARI hybrid maize 9 produced higher yields in Rangpur (9.05 t/ha) than other districts. The lowest grain yield (7.88 t/ha) was observed in Kurigram.

Performance of BARI hybrid maize variety is comparable to imported hybrids and suitable for cultivation in Northern Districts. Farmers showed their interest to grow BARI hybrid maize if the seeds are available at the time of cultivation. Farmer’s opined that the height of BARI maize hybrid is comparatively higher than commercial varieties.
