Variety and Species
For Mother and Baby trial evaluation, a team comprises of farmers, extension staffs, researchers and resource person was formed to carry out the evaluation at the time of vegetative/flowering, harvesting and post-harvest stages. The mother trial was conducted at the research field of RARS, Jessore & Barisal and RHRS, Patuakhali in 2013-14 cropping season. Three Baby trials were carried out at farmers' fields in adjacent to the all BARI research stations. Participatory approaches included not only farmers but also the other actors in relevant production-utilization-marketing chains. A total of 9 CIP Clones namely, CIP III (380583.8), CIP 112 (380606.6), CIP us (381381.26), CIP 126 (392797.22), CIP 127 (392820.1), CIP 130 (393617.1),CIP 139 (396311.1), LB 12 (396031.119) and CIP-14 (397079.6) were selected from last year trial conducted at one location Jessore were included in the present participatory M & B trial at three locations. Two popular commercial varieties Diamant and Asterix were included in the trial as check. The Mother trial was planted on 291h November 2013 at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jessore; 26th November 2013 at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS). Barisal and I st December 2013 at Regional Horticulture Research Station (RHRS), Patuakhali with three replications. Seeds were sown on three Baby trials in the three farmers' fields of Naodagram village, Nawapara union, Jessore at 26th November 20:3 without replication. Similarly another three baby trials in the three farmers' fields situated at.adjacent to research station of RARS, BARI, Rahmatpur, Babugonj, Barisal. Last three baby trials fields were situated at very adjacent village namely Kartickpasa of RHRS, Dumki, Patuakhaii dated on l" December, 2013. Fertilizers were applied @ 160-44-132-15 kg/ha ofN, P, K and S, respectively. Full amount of P, K and S and 50% of N were applied as basal and the remaining amount of urea was side dressed at 35 DAP. Weeding, fungicide spraying and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crops were haulm pulled at 90 DAP. Data on different growth and yield contributing characters were recorded and statistically analyzed. The crop was harvested on 2nd March 2014 at Jessore; 41h March 2014 at Barisal and 7th March 2014 at Patuakhali. There are three stages of evaluation: 1) vegetative/flowering, 2) harvest and 3) post- harvest. At the time of flowering (vegetative development), selection criteria for vegetative growth were evaluated by participatory evaluation method and the farmers' opinions about the desired and true status of the clones was carried out. At the time of harvest, the following evaluations were performed: a standard evaluation of yield, a participatory selection of the clones, and an organoleptic evaluation. After the harvest, a participatory evaluation of the characteristics for storage behavior of the clones was done. The participation of the key players in the potato chain (farmers, merchants, consumers) was encouraged. The methods to be applied in the evaluation of each phase (growth/flowering, harvest, and post-harvest) were explained and the forms for data registration are presented. Two different types of seeds have been provided to them for segregated male or female. Six seeds were given an individual for voting. Among them three seed for first priority vote, two for second and third for one seed farmers putted for each criterion. Only three criteria they had to choose in all phases.
