Evaluation of Inbred Lines of Excess Soil Moisture Tolerant Maize Through Line × Tester Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of inbred lines using line × Tester analysis was conducted in maize involving 13 lines and 2 tester under excess soil moisture condition at the RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during Kharif II of 2014. The experiment was conducted for grain yield, maturity and growth parameters and SPAD value to determine the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects. Parents with good GCA for grain yield BMZ 6, BMZ 15, BMZ 66, BIL 182 & CML 116, for earliness BMZ 22 & for dwarfness BIL 26 may be used in hybridization program as donors. Better performing four crosses BMZ 15×CML 425, BMZ 22×CML 425, BMZ 66×CML 425 and Ki 21×CML 425 were selected to evaluate in multilocations.

Objectives:

To determine the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of crosses of Maize for different traits and
To explore heterotic moisture tolerant maize hybrid combinations.

Methodology:

During Kharif II 2014, a total of 26 cross combinations of Maize were made through Line × Tester mating design. The 26 F₁’s, 13 S₄ parental lines and two testers (CML425 and CML429) were grown in a alpha lattice design with two replications with spacing of 75 cm x 20 cm at RARS, Jamalpur during Kharif, 2014. Seeds were sown in 10 September, 2014. One border row was used at each end of the replication for minimize the border effect. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40, 5 and 1 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S, Zn and B respectively. One third urea and total amount of other fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. The remaining urea was induced in two installments as top dressing. Irrigation was applied at knee high stage with a ponding depth of 12-15 cm continuous for 10 days. Standard agronomic practices were done to raise a healthy crop and plant protection measures were taken. Insecticide was applied to control aphid. The observations were recorded on ten randomly selected plants for quantitative characters viz. days to 50% silking, plant height, ear height and SPAD value. On the other hand, grain yield was calculated total weight of grain of a plot and converted into ton/ha. Combining ability analysis was done as per the method given by Kempthrone (1957).

Achievement/Findings:

The analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all the characters studied indicating sufficient genetic variability among the genotypes. Highly significant differences were observed between parents for all characters except yield (t/ha) indicated wide variability among the parents. Highly significant differences were also observed for parent vs crosses for days to silking, SPAD value, plant height and ear height. In case of variances, highly significant differences were observed due to crosses and lines for all the tested characters indicating substantial variability prevail in them. Variance in respect of tester, no significant difference was found for any character. Variance for line X tester were highly significant for all characters except yield (t/ha) indicated variability among the characters except yield. The higher estimation of dominance variance (σ²sca) as compared to additive variance (σ²gca) for all the six characters probably due to predominance of non-additive gene action which suggesting the scope of improvement of these characters through heterosis breeding. Parents with good gca for yield (BMZ 6, BMZ 15, BMZ 66, BIL 182 & CML 116) for earliness (BMZ 22) & for dwarfness (BIL 26) may be used in hybridization program as donar.
