A field experiment was conducted in the farmers’ field in four villages of Godagari upazila under Rajshahi district in High Barind Tract during Rabi 2014-15 to test the performance of locally developed promising low water requirement hybrid maize and selection of medium height for Barind areas. There were eight lines/varieties viz. P1xP4, P1xP7, P2xP5, P2xP6, Q1xQ2, P1xP2, Shuvra and Zimbabwe tested in the farmer’s field of High Barind Tract. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design. Each entry was cultivated under irrigated and non-irrigated condition in each location. Significant variation were observed among the genotypes on the different parameters of maize in both irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. The plant height was the highest in Suvra and Zimbabwe while Q1xQ2 and P1xP2 produced the shortest plant. There was small difference in 100-seed weight between irrigated and non-irrigated condition. Crop grown with normal irrigation produced comparatively bolded seed. However, all the tested material except Suvra gave the similar 100-seed weight where as Suvra gave the lowest one. Similar plant height to Suvra and Zimbabwe, gave also tallest ear height; and Q1xQ2 and P1xP2 bearded the cob with shortest height. Genotype, P2xP5, and P1xP4 were intermediate in respect to ear height. Days to maturity did not differ due to irrigation.The Suvra matured earliest but gave lowest yield, and had lodging tendency. There was no. yield difference of white maize genotype between irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. The numerically higher yields were obtained from the treatments P2xP5, P1xP2 and P1xP4, in both irrigation regimes.

The field trial was conducted in High Barind Tract at farmers’ field in 4 villages of Godagari upazila under Rajshahi district  during rabi 2014-15. The villages were Kadamshahar, Borodama, Chabbishnagar and Mishonmor (Tilahari). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design. There were eight lines/varieties viz. P1xP4, P1xP7, P2xP5, P2xP6, Q1xQ2, P1xP2, Shuvra and Zimbabwe. Among the tested lines, Shuvra and Zimbabwe were kept as commercial check. The unit plot size was 8 rows 4 m long plot for each entry. The materials were sown in two sets separately in each location (i) One set- following normal irrigation practice and (ii) another set- seedling establishment and single irrigation were applied just prior to flowering. The seeds were sown by maintaining the spacing of 75 x 20 cm. Seeds were sown on 24-30 November 2014. The land was fertilized with 250, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg ha-1 of N, P, K, S, Zn & B, respectively. One third of urea was applied as basal dose and rest of urea was top dressed in two equal splits at knee height stage (after 40-45 days after emergence-1st top dress) and before flowering (2nd top dress). No pesticide was applied in these trials. The crop was harvested on 02-06 May 2015. The seed yield and yield components of maize were recorded. All the data were statistically analyzed following the F-test and the mean comparisons were made by DMRT at 5% level (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Under irrigated condition, grain yield of maize was influenced significantly by difference in genotypes in all locations except Kadamshahar. The Suvra gave the lowest grain yield in all the locations. The P2xP5, P1xP2 and Zimbabwe gave the maximum grain yield in Borodama. In Missionmor, Considering the seed yield, line P2xP5, P1xP2 and P1xP4   was found to  the suitable for white maize production in High Barind Tract.
