Screening of Maize Inbred Lines Against Salinity Stress Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was undertaken to evaluate 85 maize inbred lines at the Agricultural Research Station, Banerpota, Satkhira during the kharif season of 2015 to find out suitable salt tolerant inbred lines. Variations were observed for kernel yield, days to tasseling, silking, and maturity, plant and ear height. Considering kernel yield and other contributing traits the inbred lines I-63 (3.38 t/ha) and I-5 (3.14 t/ha) were the best among inbred under salinity stress at field condition and seven lines were identified for further study.

Objectives:

To screening of available maize inbred lines against salinity stress in field condition

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Banerpota, Satkhira during March to June, 2015. Eight five locally developed and collected maize inbred lines were used in this experiment. Seeds of different inbred lines were sown on 2^nd March 2015 following alpha lattice design with two replications. The unit plot size was 1 row 3 m long. The spacing were 60 cm and 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was maintained after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 35, 70, 40 and 5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S and Zn, respectively. Boron @ 1.5 kg/ha may be applied in boron deficient soil. One third of urea as basal dose and rest of urea in two equal splits at knee height stage (after 40-45 days emergence-1^st top dress) and before flowering (2^nd top dress). All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Ten randomly selected plants from each plot were used for collecting data on different traits. All plants of each plot were considered for number of plants harvested, number of ears harvested and plot yield. Kernel yield per ha was calculated by converting the field weight of the plot and moisture of the grain. Among the 85 inbred lines, only 49 lines were given yield and those were used for data analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 85 inbred lines 36 could not survive and data were processed and analyzed with rest of the 49 inbred. During flooding time the crop faced 11ds/m salinity. Variations were found among the lines for different trails. Kernel yield ranged from 0.03 to 3.38 t ha^-1. The inbred line I-63 showed the highest yield (3.38 t ha^-1) significantly and the lowest yield was observed in I-39 (0.03 t ha^-1) under salinity stress. Days to tasseling ranged from 53-65 days, days to silking from 59 to 71 days, days to maturity from 97 to 104 days. The inbred lines I-21, I-36 and I-42 showed the lowest days to maturity (97 days). Plant height was the highest in 1-4 (158.9 cm) the lowest (57.7 cm) in I-47. Ear height ranged from 10.80 to 65.20 cm. Considering kernel yield and other contributing traits and field observations seven inbred lines I-4, I-5, I-34, I-37, I-38, I-60 and I63 were better and suitable for further investigations in next year at salinity stress prone area.
