Screening of Maize Hybrids Against Salinity Stress Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 80 locally developed maize hybrids studied at the Agricultural Research Station, Banerpota, Satkhira during the kharif season of 2015. Among the 80 maize hybrids, in respect of yield, 15 hybrids were evaluated. During flooding time the crop faced 11 dS/m salinity. Variations were found among the hybrids for all the trails. Kernel yield ranged from 0.40 to 5.69 t ha^-1. The hybrid H-58 showed the highest yield (5.69 t ha^-1) which is significantly higher than others. The lowest yield was observed from H-27 (0.40 t/ha). Days to tasseling was the lowest (51.5 days) in H-1, H-5, H-78 and H-79 and highest (62.5 days) was observed in H-70. Days to silking ranged from 56 to 68 days, days to maturity from 94 to 103 days. Plant height from 88 to 186 cm, ear height ranged from 30 to 85 cm. Considering kernel yield and other yield contributing traits and salinity tolerance, the crosses H-58 (5.69 t/ha) and H-75 (4.65 t ha^-1) were the best among all crosses under salinity stress and 15 hybrids were selected for further study.

Objectives:

To screen available maize hybrids against salinity tolerance in coastal field condition

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Banerpota, Satkhira during March to June 2015. Eighty locally developed maize hybrids were used in this experiment. Seeds of different hybrids were sown on 1^st March 2015 following alpha lattice design with two replications. The unit plot size was 1 row 3 m long. The spacing were 60 cm and 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was maintained after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250:55:110:40:5:1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Ten randomly selected plants from each plot were used for collecting data on different traits. All plants of each plot were considered for number of plants harvested, number of ears harvested and plot yield. Kernel yield per ha was calculated by converting the field weight of the plot. The data were statistically analyzed.

Considering kernel yield and yield contributing traits and field observations the following 15 hybrids viz H-35, H-37, H-42, H-43, H-49, H-52, H-58, H-61, H-62, H-66, H-72, H-73, H-74, H-75 and H-79 were found better and suitable for further investigations in next year at a salinity stress prone area.
