Screening of Sweet Potato Varieties for Salt Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six BARl released sweet potato variety and a local cultivar as checked was evaluated in two locations during 2013-14 crop seasons for their suitability against salinity. All the studied variety of BARI performed better in the salinity level of 2.20-9.41 dSlm at Satkhira and 3.98-12.60 dSlm at Kuakata, Patuakhali during their growing period. Comprising both the location, BARA SP-4 gave the highest yield (30.07 t/ha) followed by BARl SP-6 (29.91 tlha) & BARl SP-8 (28.72 tlha) while the lowest was recorded in BARl SP-7 (24.43 tlha) followed by BARl SP-13 (25.39 tlha). Considering all the growth and yield contributing characters of sweet potato, this experiment will be repeated in the next year for getting concluding results.

Objectives:

To find out suitable sweet potato varieties for growing in saline of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out at ARS Satkhira and OFRD Kuakata, Patuakhali during the .13-2014 cropping season. Six BARI sweetpotato varieties (BARI SP 4, 6, 7, 8,12 & 13 along with I cultivar as check were included in this study. Vines were planted on 2nd week of December, 13 having plot size of 3.0 x 3.0m with 3 replication following ReBD. Fertilizers were applied in experimental plots at the rate of 70-25-90-15-2-2 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-B-Zn as a source of Urea, P, MP, Gypsum, Boric Acid, Zinc Sulphate, respectively. Weeding, irrigation, earthing-up and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the growth and yield contributing characters of sweet potato, all the studied sweet potato varieties of BARI performed better in the saline areas of Satkhira and Kuakata, Patuakhali. But for conclusion of the research findings, this experiment will be repeated in 2014-15 cropping season at Patuakhali and Satkhira.
