Development of Protocol for Analysing of Formaldehyde Contamination in Fruits and Vegetables.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to determine a suitable method for detection of formaldehyde in fruits and vegetables. The method was based on spectrometric analysis. Some important and common fruits (mango and litchi) and vegetables (better gourd, teasel gourd and long yard bean) and one fruit juice (mango juice) were evaluated for formaldehy detection and quantification. When fruits were dipped in 1%, 5% and 10% formaldehyde solution it did not show any positive effect to enhance self-life of mango and litchi. Formaldehyde was detected in all treatment groups of mango and litchi including their control. Vegetables, like better gourd produced 0.9118 mg/kg, teasel gourd produced 0.7195 mg/kg and long yard bean produced 0.3349 mg/kg formaldehyde naturally. Formaldehyde was also detected in mango juice (1.5547 mg/kg). In mango, formaldehyde was estimated to be 1.7302 mg/kg. Among the vegetable, better gourd, teasel gourd and long yard bean also contained 0.9118 mg/kg, 0.7195 mg/kd and 0.334 mg/kg of formaldehyde respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate and find out a suitable method for detection of formaldehyde in fruits and vegetables.

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out at the Laboratory of Postharvest Technology Division, BARl, Gazipur during the year 2013-2014. Mango (CV Langra) was collected from mango growers garden in Chapai Nawabjong and litchi (CV Bombay) was collected from Dinajpur. Five samples were collected from local market. Those samples were mango, better gourd, teasel gourd, long yard bean and a bottle of mango juice. Other fruits, vegetables and juice were collected from local market for instant analysis.Three groups of mango (Five mangos in each group) were treated with 1%, 5% and 10% formaldehyde and three groups of litchi (50 litchi in each group) was treated with same concentration of formaldehyde respectively. Another four groups of litchi was treated with 500 ppm, 1000 ppm, 5000 ppm and 10000 ppm formaldehyde to observe storage ability. All the fruits were dipped in formaldehyde for 15 minutes. After dipping all fruits were air dried and kept at ambient condition. One group of control was also maintained for both fruits. Formaldehyde was estimated in all fruits, vegetables and drinks following AOAC 931.08.

Achievement/Findings:

Formaldehyde was detected in all treatment groups of mango and litchi including their control. Formaldehyde was also detected in mango juice (1.5547 mg/kg). It however to be noted,that fruits and vegetables naturally produces formaldehyde as well.
