Two experiments were conducted during July to December, 1993 and January to June, 1994 at BINA farm, Mymensingh. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with two factors e.g. spacing (15 cm x 20 cm, 15 cm x 10 cm and 10 cm x 10 cm) and variety (BR11, TL and BINA-115 for Aman and TL, BR14 and BINA-19 for Boro) with three replications.  At maturity, data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. Data were analyzed statistically and mean values were evaluated by DMRT. Population pressure reduced the tiller number/hill to a minimum of 3-4 both in aman and boro seasons. The number of tillers/m2 varied from 269 to 280 during aman and from 268 to 408 during boro season. Due to population pressure, number of panicles m2 increased parallel with tillers along with decreases of number of grains/panicle, panicle length, grain size and seed yield/m2 were unaffected. TDM/m2 increased but harvest index decreased proportionally with increasing population pressure. But in the aman season, excepting increase in tillers and panicles/m2, all other parameters were unaffected with increasing population pressure. BR14 recorded the highest seed yield of 6.54 t/ha in boro season.

Objective of the study was to achieve tillers as minimum as 4 per hill by population pressure in indica-japonica type of high yielding varieties of rice under Bangladesh conditions and its effect on panicle structure and seed yield.

Two experiments were conducted during July to December, 1993 and January to June, 1994 at BINA farm, Mymensingh. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block with two factors e.g. spacing (15 cm x 20 cm, 15 cm x 10 cm and 10 cm x 10 cm) and variety (BR11, TL and BINA-115 for Aman and TL, BR14 and BINA-19 for Boro) with three replications, having unit plot size of 4 m x 3 m. Thirty five and forty day old single seedling was planted per hill in August, 1993 and February, 1994 respectively. NPKS fertilizers were applied @ 100, 60, 40 and 10 kg/ha respectively. At maturity, 15 hills were harvested randomly (5 hills basis) to collect data on plant height and yield components. Yield data were recorded from 10 m harvested area. Data were analyzed statistically and mean values were evaluated by DMRT.
