Effect of Cultivar and Spacing on Weed Infestation and Performance of Transplant Aman Rice in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during July to December 2001 to investigate the effect of Cultivar and spacing on weed infestation and performance of transplant Aman rice. Thirteen weed species belonging to eight families infested in the experimental plots. Cultivar, spacing and their interaction significantly affected weed density and weed dry weight. Cultivar significantly influenced all the crop characters studied with the exception of panicle length. Sonar Bangla 1 produced the highest grain and straw yields and Nizershail the lowest. Spacing had a significant effect on all the crop characters except panicle length and 1000-grain weight. The highest grain yield was obtained from the spacing 15x 25cm and the lowest grain yield was produced by the widest spacing 25 x 35cm. Sonar Bangla 1 produced the highest grain yield in 15x25 cm spacing and Nizershail produced the lowest yield in 25 x 35cm spacing.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of cultivar and spacing on weed infestation and performance of transplant Aman rice.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period of June 30 to December 06, 2001. The experimental treatments were included three cultivars (Sonar Bangla 1, BRRI Dhan 39 and Nizersail) and five spacing (10x15 cm, 10x20 cm, 15x25 cm, 20x30 cm and 25x35 cm).The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental field was fertilized with Urea, T.S.P., MP., Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate (ZnSO₄) at the rate of 270, 130, 120, 110 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively for Sonar Bangla 1; 150, 100, 70, 60 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively for BRRI Dhan 39 and 90, 75, 60, 60 and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively for Nizershail. Seedlings of 21 days old were transplanted on 24 July 2001. Intercultural operations such as gap filling, weeding, water management and pest management was done as and when necessary. Data on weeds were collected from three 0.25 m² (0.5x0.5 m) quadrate 1 from each of the unit plots at different stages of crop plant such as 21 DAT, 42 DAT and flowering stage. Ten hills (excluding border hills) were randomly selected out side the 1.0 m² area and uprooted from each unit plot prior to crop harvest for recording data on different plant characters. After sampling, the whole plot was harvested when about 90% of grains become golden yellow in colour. The data on different agronomic characters were recorded from the randomly selected hills in each plot and those on grain and straw yields were recorded from the middle 1.0 m² area. All of the data were analyzed using Analysis of variance techniques and mean differences were adjusted by DMRT.
