Participatory Selections of Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (ofsp) Advance Clones

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four CIP promising clones and two TCRC OFSP hybrid clones along with BARl SP-3, BARl SP-4, m SP-12 and BARl SP-13 were evaluated at research stations and farmers' fields of Barisal, tagong and Jessore regions of Bangladesh following Mother & Baby Trial Approach during :3-/4. In this trial, both research station and farmers' field, the crop was evaluated at vegetative harvesting stage. Results at vegetative stage showed that, ClP 440267.2 ranked first followed byH6209 (2nd) and BARI SP-4 (3rd) in Barisal. While in Jessore, H96 09 ranked first, BARl SP-4 se and BARISP-13 (CIP 440014) scored third among all the studied clones/varieties. At harvest, stage, TCRC hybrid H9.6119 ranked first, ClP-441132 second and ClP-440267.2 ranked third Barisal region. While, at Jessore region BARI SP -13 (ClP 440014) ranked first, H9609 second BARf SP-12 (ClP 440001) stood third. Considering appearance of the roots after boil, flesh CI ' taste, presence of fiber and flesh texture during organoleptic evaluation of the harvested clolltl. H9.6.119 rankedfirstfollowed by ClP-194515.15, BARf SP-4 and ClP-441132 while farmerscio was the poorest to BARI SP-12 (ClP 440001) and ClP-194513.15. The yield performance of. mother trial on 3 locations recorded highest 35.26 t/ha in BARI SP-12 followed by H9.609 (31. t/ha) and CIP-4402612 (2162 t/ha) on the other hand the lowest was observed in BARl SP-J (9 t/ha). The highest dry yield (9.19 t/ha) was obtained in BARl SP 12.fOilowed by H9.6.09 (7.11 tiha and BARl SP-4 (654 t/ha). For baby trials, H9.609 gave the highest yield (32. 39t/ha) followed, BARI SP-12 (CIP 440001) (30.39t/ha) and ClP-440267.2 (30.39t/ha) at all the locations.

Objectives:

To evaluate appropriate variety(s) which will be high yielding with rich in vitamin A content, through participatory variety selection method.

Methodology:

The present experiment was carried out at RARS, Jessore, RARS, Barisal and ARS, Pahartall Chittagong during the sweetpotato growing season of 20 13-2014. Four CIP clones, 2 TCRC hybrids. 2 newly released varieties viz., BARI SP-I2 (CIP 440014) & BARI SP-13 (CIP 440001) along with BARI SP-3 and BARI SP-4 as check were included in this study. Vines were planted on second week of December, 2013 in the field having plot size of 3.0 x 3.0m with 3 replication following . RCBD. The same clones were also planted in three farmer's field of each location without replication to know the farmers choice, Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plots at the rate of 70-25-90-15-2-2 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-8-Zn in the form of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Boric Acid Zinc-sulphate, respectively. The sweet potato was harvested on last week of April. Data on yield yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. Flesh color of tuberous roots was taken according to the color chart provided by CIP (Guide for using the RHSColor Chart for selecting high beta carotene content of sweet potato) that also indicates the approximate beta carotene content of the flesh.Evaluation of the studied clones was conducted in two stages of sweet potato growth viz., I)vegetative and 2) harvesting. After 65 days of planting, vegetative stage evaluation was done both at Jessore and Barisal during last week of February, 2014. Harvesting stage with organoleptic taste evaluation was done during last of April, 2014. Selection criteria for vegetative growth are evaluated by participatory evaluation method and the farmers' opinions about the desired and true status of thelanes was carried out. At the time of harvest, the following evaluations were performed: a standard evaluation of yield, a participatory selection of the clones, and an organoleptic evaluation.

Achievement/Findings:

Fifty five participants (35 men and 20 women) were present for voting and they have selected short duration variety as first, medium size plants as second and disease resistance variety as third in Barisal . On the other hand, short duration variety scored first, disease and pest resistance second and year round variety as third at Jessore.
