Development of Fertilizer Recommendation for Potato-maize-t.aman Cropping Pattern in High Ganges River Floodplain

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at farmer’s field under MLT site, Shibpur, Puthia, Rajshahi during,2014 to 2015 to verify the present fertilizer recommendation for Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern. Four treatments viz. T₁=100% recommended fertilizer dose based on STB and HYG basis); T₂= 25% increased than T₁; T3=50% increased than T₁ and T₄ = Farmers’ Practice (Based on survey) were considered for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with six replications. The BARI Alu-7, BARI Hybrid Maize-9 and BRRI dhan33 were selected for potato, maize and rice, respectively. System productivity in terms of REY was estimated for each treatment. Maximum REY was estimated in T₃ (30.56 tha^-1) which was very close to that of T₂ (30.35 tha^-1) and minimum in T4 (25.77 tha^-1). REY in T₃ and T₂ was about 18.58% and 17.78% higher than T₄, respectively. Gross margin in T₂ found was little higher than that of T₃ despite of having higher gross return in T₃ as 50% higher dose of fertilizer put an extra cost to this treatment. Thus higher MBCR was recorded from T₂ and the lowest from T₄ treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum and economic fertilizer package for Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern in High Ganges River Floodplain.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at MLT site, Shibpur, Puthia, Rajshahi during 2014 to 2015 to determine the most suitable as well as economic fertilizer dose for Potato-Maize-T.Aman rice cropping pattern. Geographically the experimental field was located at 24⁰22.98' N latitude and 88⁰46.41' E. longitude with an elevation of 21 m above sea level. The soil series of the experiment site was Gopalpur with texture of silty loam. Before conducting the experiment, soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-15 cm for laboratory analysis. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with six replications. The unit plot size was 20 m². Focusing on the soil test values , doses of fertilizers for different treatments were set by using the formula as outlined by BARC (FRG, 2015). Four treatments, viz. T₁= 100% recommended fertilizer dose based on STB(soil test based) and HYG (High yield goal) basis); T₂= T₁ +25% additional; T₃= T₁ +50% additional and T₄ = Farmers’ practice (Based on survey) were considered for the experiment to measure the response of different crops to the applied fertilizers in Potato- Maize- T. Amanrice cropping pattern. Yield of different crops were recorded as per treatment specification. Thereafter, yield of potato and maize were converted into rice equivalent yield (REY) as per Ahlawat and Sharma (1983), where , REY = {(Yield of each crop (t ha^-1) x economic value of respective crop (Tk. ton^-1)/Price of rice grain (Tk. ton^-1)}. All the necessary data regarding yield and yield attributes were collected and analyzed statistically following Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Maximum REY was found in T₃ (30.56 tha^-1). However, the treatment T₂ (100% recommended fertilizer dose based on STB and HYG basis +25% additional) gave higher profit than other treatments.
