Development of Fertilizer Package for Potato-t.aus-t.aman Rice Cropping Pattern in Eastern Surma-kushiara Floodplain

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at farming system research and development (FSRD) site, Jalalpur and multi-location testing (MLT) sites of Moulvibazar and Sunamganj during 2014-15 that was initiated in 2012-13 to develop a cropping pattern based fertilizer dose for Potato-T. Aus-T. Aman rice in Sylhet. There were four nutrient packages i.e., T₁: Soil test based (STB) fertilizer dose for high yield goal, T₂: T₁+ CD 5 t ha^-1, T₃: T₁ along with CD 5 t ha^-1 in IPNS approach and T₄: Farmers’ practices as control. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications. The trial was started with potato (var. Diamant) and followed by T. Aus rice (var. BRRI dhan-48) and T. Aman rice (BINA Dhan 7) in the subsequent season. The tuber yield of potato varied significantly among the treatments and variation was also found over the locations. In 2013-14, the treatment T₃ produced the highest tuber yield of potato and grain yield of T. Aus and T. Aman rice in all three locations. The highest T. Aman rice equivalent yield was also obtained from T₃.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable cropping pattern based fertilizer package to increase crop production.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at farming system research and development (FSRD) site, Jalalpur and multi-location testing (MLT) sites, Moulvibazar and Sunamgonj location during 2014-15 to develop a cropping pattern based fertilizer dose for Potato-T. Aus-T. Aman rice in Sylhet. The soil of the experimental plots belongs to piedmont series under AEZ 20 which was chemically analyzed at Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI) laboratory, South Surma, Sylhet and levels of the fertilizers were selected on the basis of target yields as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide' 2012. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications. The unit plot size was 4m × 5m. The trial was started with potato (var. Diamant) and followed by T. Aus rice (var. BRRI dhan48) and T. Aman rice (BINA Dhan 7) in the subsequent season. The field of potato was prepared by power tiller and followed by laddering. There were four nutrient packages i.e., T₁: Soil test based (STB) fertilizer dose for high yield goal, T₂: T1+ CD 5 t ha^-1, T₃: T₁ along with CD 5 t ha^-1 in IPNS approach and T₄: Farmers practices as control. Fertilizer recommendations for potato were calculated from soil test values. For potato, half of urea and all other inorganic fertilizers were applied according to individual plot and mixed with soil at the time of final land preparation. The rest urea was top dressed at 25 and 45 days after sowing (DAS). Potato (var. Diamant) were sown on 20-25 November. The tubers were planted by maintaining the spacing of 60cm × 15cm. The crop was harvested at maturity on 2-5 March. Intercultural operations viz., 2 earthings up, 2 weeding, 2 irrigations and fungicide (Meledio duo, Ridomil gold @ 2g/litre sprayed 3 times) were done. Data on yield of potato, T. Aus and T. Aman rice was recorded in time. All the data were statistically analyzed and the mean comparisons were made by LSD at 5% level (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). The economic analysis was done for gross return and gross margin with current market price following the method suggested by Perrin et al. (1979).

Two years results showed that the treatment T₃ (STB + CD 5 t ha^-1) performed better and produced higher rice equivalent yield (16.67 t ha^-1 ) in all three locations
