Effect of Date of Transplanting on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Boro Rice Varieties Under Rice Intensification System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to determine the optimum transplanting date of boro rice varieties under the System of Rice Intensification at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from November 2004 to June 2005. The experiment comprised of five dates of transplanting viz. 17 December 2004, 01, 16, and 31 January and 15 February 2005 and four boro rice varieties (3 hybrid and 1 inbred) viz. Hira, Aftab, Jagoroni and BRRI dhan29. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Fourteen day old seedlings were used in this experiment. The date of transplanting significantly influenced on plant height, number of total tillers hill^-1, effective tillers hill^-1, panicle length, grains panicle^-1and grain yield. Almost all parameters showed the best performance at16 January and the lowest at 17 December. The highest grain yield (5.93 t ha^-1) was produced by the variety Jagoroni because of maximum number of effective tillers hill^-1, panicle length, number of grains panicle^-1 and 1000-grain weight. On the other hand, BRRI dhan29 produced the lowest values for the aforesaid parameters. The variety Jagoroni transplanted at 16 January was the better in respect of growth, yield and yield components of boro rice under the system of rice intensification.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum transplanting date of Boro rice varieties under the System of Rice Intensification

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from November 2004 to June 2005. The experimental plot was a medium high land with silt loam texture belonging to non-calcareous dark-gray flood plain soil (Agro-Ecological Zone-9). The PH of the soil ranged from 6.6 to 7.0. The experiment comprised five dates of transplanting viz. 17 December 2004, 01, 16 and 31 January and 15 February 2005 and four boro rice varieties (3 hybrid and 1 inbred) viz. Hira, Aftab, Jagoroni and BRRI dhan29. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.0 m × 2.5 m and the spaces between blocks and plots were 1 m and 0.5 m, respectively. The crop was fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rates of 300, 75, 60, 28 and 5 kg ha^-1, respectively. The entire amounts of all fertilizers except urea were applied as basal while urea was applied in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Fourteen-day-old seedlings were transplanted at the rate of one seedlings hill^-1 at 30 cm × 30 cm spacing. Different intercultural operations such as gap filling, weeding and pesticide application were done as and when necessary. Five hills were randomly selected at maturity and uprooted from each unit plot prior to harvest for recording data on different plant characters. The crop was harvested at full maturity and the grains were threshed, cleaned and sun dried to record grain yield plot^-1 then converted to t ha^-1. The recorded data were analyzed using the Analysis of Variance Technique. The mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

It may be conceded that Jagoroni is the best variety in boro season regarding grain yield among the varieties studied and it should preferably be transplanted on 16 January under system of rice intensification to have appreciable good yield.
