Whole Farm Research Approach and Its Participatory Methodologies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different research approaches have been practized at the Farming Systems Research (FSR) Site, Palima, Tangail since 1984 i. e., the component trials (research and farmer's managed trials), supcrirnpose.c trials, and cropping systems study. The evaluation indicated that a few technologies sustained in the systems after withdrawal of inputs. To overcome the identified problems a whole farm research approach (WFRA) was initiated with resource poor farmers (landless and marginal) who represent 65% of the farmer's community. The objectives were to increase income, livelihood and find ways of sustainability. The sustainability would be determined :by evaluating the same technology in biological, technical and economic aspect. The total resource, yearly income, expenditure, cost of living and financial position of the 24 farmers were determined, out of them 12 were cooperator farmers(CF) , the other 12 were non-cooperator farmers (NCF) , control. r.ij i!KO:'1C generating sectors i. e., crops, homestead, livestock, and fishcr.es v/ete improved hy intervening with modern technologies. The results indicated that total consumption of vegetables, fruits, fish and livestock products were more among the CF than the NCF. The CF received full technical arid 50% input support. The input help was withdrawn stage-wise. The results indicated that 75% of the technologies sustain in the systems where investment was little and availability of inputs was ensured. On the other hand, intervention led them to improve their income. Results indicated that financial position of the CF becomes improved which led them to spend more mc ncy for living and livelihood.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A whole farm research approach (WFRA) was undertaken at RSR site, Palirna, Tangail during July 1988. Twelve Cooperator Farmers (CF) (six from each landless and marginal category) and 12 Non-cooperator Farmers (NCF) were selected by adopting proportionately stratified random sampling technique (Bernsten, 1979). An investigation into the farm resource of the CF and NCF was completed in June 1989 through case study, survey and monitoring (Islam et al., 1990a) where total resources, yearly income and expenditure, non-repayment of loans, financial position and cost of living of all the farmers were determined.
