Effect of Planting Density and Methods of Sowing on Yield and Yield Attributes of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Filed Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during April to July 2004 to evaluate the effects of planting methods and seed rates on yield and yield attributes of sesame. Among all the seeding rates, 9.0 kg ha^-1 (47.83 plans m^-2) produced the highest grain yield, stover and biological yield which is statistically similar to 7.5 kg ha^-1 by plant height, branch plant^-1, main stem and branch capsules plant^-1 and to 10.5 kg ha^-1 by grain yield, stover and biological yield. It was also evident that the performance of line sowing method is superior to broadcast method in terms of grain yield and other parameters. The overall performance of S₃ at the line sowing method was found to be the best by producing the topmost grain yield of 1.40 t ha^-1 and the second highest grain yield was in M₁ at the same spacing.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum seed rate and suitable method of planting of sesame (T-6) for its profitable production under the agro- ecological condition of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to July 2004. The experimental field is characterized by non-calcareous dark grey floodplain soil belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain, Agro-Ecological Zone 9 . The experimental field was slightly loamy with a pH of 6.32 and having 0.10 and 1.78 % of total nitrogen and organic matter contents respectively. The experiment consisted of six seed rates viz. 6.0 (S₁), 7.5 (S₂), 9.0 (S₃), 10.5 (S₄), 12.0 (S₅) and 13.5 (S₆) kg ha^-1 with two methods of planting viz. broadcast (M1) and line sowing (M₂) of sesame (T-6). The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m and the field was prepared as per require to obtain a desirable tilth. Fertilizers were applied to the plots at the rate of 120, 140, 50 and 110 kg ha^-1 of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively. One-half of urea, whole amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum were applied during final land preparation. The rest urea was top-dressed at 25 days after sowing (DAS). Seeds were sown in broadcast and line sowing method with 30 cm x 5 cm plant spacing. The intercultural operations like thinning, weeding and plant protection measures were done as necessary. At maturity, ten plants were harvested randomly from each unit plot to record the data on yield contributing characters. The crop was harvested when 80% pods were matured then threshed, cleaned and sun dried to record grain yield plot^-1. The grain yield was adjusted to 12% moisture content. Straws were also sun-dried to record its yield plot^-1. Grain and straw yields were then converted to t ha^-1. The recorded data were analysed using the analysis of variance with the help of computer package MSTAT. The mean differences among the treatments were adjudged with Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

It could be concluded that the used seed rate treatments in the modern sesame variety showed almost similar results previously reported by different researchers. The results further pointed out that among the seed rates 9.0 kg ha-1 is the highest grain yielder (1.38 t ha^-1). It was also confirmed that the line sowing was superior to broadcast method of sowing.
