Genetic Divergence in Snake Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic diversity of of snake gourd was investigated using 30 genotypes at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during the growing season of April to September 2006. The genotypes were grouped into four clusters. The clusters IV and II consisted of the highest number of genotypes and were twelve and ten respectively. The cluster I contained the lowest number of genotypes and it was two. The clustering pattern of the genotypes under this study revealed that the genotypes collected from the same location were grouped into different clusters. The inter cluster distance were larger than the intra cluster distance suggesting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The highest intra cluster distance was computed for cluster III (4.11) and the minimum intra cluster distance was found in cluster I (2.56). The clusters IV and II were more diverse as indicated by the maximum inter cluster distances between them (3.01) and the minimum inter cluster divergence was observed between cluster III and IV (1.55). Cluster II had the highest cluster mean value for number of fruits per plant (28) and fruit yield (39.99 t ha^-1), but cluster III had the highest cluster mean value for weight of fruit per plant (4.26 kg).

Objectives:

To investigate the genetic divergence of snake gourd.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna during April to September, 2006. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. Thirty snake gourd genotypes collected from north western region of Bangladesh were used for the study. Each snake gourd genotype was considered as an individual treatment of the experiment. Therefore, there were 30 treatments of the experiment. Unit plot size was 1.0 m x 5.0 m having 0.75m drain between two bed and plant spacing was 1m x 1m. The crop was grown following the recommended cultural practices. Data recorded on characters viz. days to anthesis of 1^st female flower, days to anthesis of 1^st male-flower, number of node at first female flower anthesis, days to first harvest, single fruit weight, number of fruits per plant, weight of fruits per plant, 100-seed weight and yield were used for diversity analysis following Mahalanobis generalized distance (D²) extended.
