Studies on Morpho-physiological Characters Contributing to Yield Potentials of Rice Lines/mutans/varieties in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with ten rice genotypes viz. three hybrid lines BINA-8-110-2-6 Iratom-24 x BR3), BINA-4-39-15-13 and BINA-4-5-17-19 (Iratom-24 x Dular), two mutants (Ml-1 and Ml-2 from IR-8), Iraton-24, BR3, IR8, BR14 and Pajam during February to June 1992. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) were calculated from the mean data of total dry matter (TDM) and leaf area. At maturity, yield and yield components were also recorded. Data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by LSD. The hybrid lines BINA-8-110-2-6 and BINA-4-5-17-19 produced higher CGR, TDM, panicle length, number of grains per panicle and grain yield over their parents Iratom-24 and BR3.

Objectives:

Objective of the study was to evaluate rice genotypes for their improvement in some morpho-physiological and architectural characters contributing to yield over their parents

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at BINA farm, Mymensingh with ten rice genotypes viz. three hybrid lines BINA-8-110-2-6 Iratom-24 x BR3), BINA-4-39-15-13 and BINA-4-5-17-19 (Iratom-24 x Dular), two mutants (Ml-1 and Ml-2 from IR-8), Iraton-24, BR3, IR8, BR14 and Pajam during February to June 1992. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4 m x 3 m and the plants were spaced at 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended doses (N₁₀₀, P₂O₅60, K₂O 60, S20, Zn 4 kg/ha). One seedling was planted per hill. Eight hills were uprooted at (2x2) hill basis from each plot at active tillering, panicle initiation, flowering (50%), milk dough and ripening stage to collect data on leaf area and total dry matter (TDM). Physiological parameters like CGR and NAR were calculated from the mean data of TDM and leaf area. At maturity 16 hills were uprooted at (2x2) hills basis for yield component and yield data were recorded from 3 m² area harvested sample. Data were analyzed statistically and the mean values were evaluated by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

The hybrid lines BINA-8-110-2-6 and BINA-4-5-17-19 had better physiological characters like nAR and CGR and morphological characters like longer panicle length and more grain number per panicle compared to their parents which contributed to yield improvement in these two lines.
