Effectiveness of Ronstar 12l -a New Formulation of Herbicide Ronstar 25ec (oxidization) to Control Weeds in Lowland and Irrigated Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to observe the effectiveness of Ronstar 12L, a new formulation of Ronstar 25EC (Oxidization), to control weeds in lowland and irrigated rice. Two experiments were conducted in BRRI farm, Gazipur during T. Aman and Boro, 1993 and 1994, respectively. The test varieties were BR11 and BR14, respectively in the T. Aman and Boro seasons. Five treatments: (i) Ronstar 12L 3 L/ha; (ii) Ronstar 25EC 1 l/ha; (iii) Ronstar 25EC 2 1/ha and; (iv) 2 hand weedings; and (v) Unweeded (control) were laid out in RCB design with four replications. Ronstar 12L controlled weeds effectively during T. Aman 1993 and gave similar grain yield as hand weeding treatment. Similar results were obtained in experiments during Boro 1994. Ronstar 12L also gave comparable plant growth and yield components to hand weeding in both T. Aman and Boro. This chemical had no phytotoxic effect on crops. Ronstar 25EC 1 I/ha was as effective as Ronstar 2 I/ha in controlling weeds. Ronstar EC application needs sprayer and it is not readily available. On the other hand, Ronstar 12L can be applied directly to the field from the container which is specially made for this purpose and costs similar to Ronstar EC (1 I/ha) application. Two hand weedings cost Tk 2180.00 and Tk 2240.00 in T. Aman and Boro especially which are considerably more expensive than Ronstar 12L which cost Tk 1250.00 fha. Hence Ronstar 12L can be used profitably to control weeds in lowland rice.

Objectives:

To determine the effectiveness of Ronstar 12L to control weeds in Boro and T. Aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted during T. Aman 1993 and Boro 1994 seasons in BRRI Farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The soil was silty clay loam, pH between 6-7 and falls in the Chhiata serie, Madhupur Tract s. During transplant Aman season, the experiment was laid out in August, 1993 and in Boro it was laid out in January, 1994 with 30 and 45 days old seedlings. The five treatments were- i) Ronstar 25EC 1 I/ha, ii) Ronstar 25EC 2 I/ha, iii) Ronstar 12L 3 I/ha [3 - (2, 4 - dichloro - 5 - (l - methylethoxy) phenyl}], iv) Two hand weedings and v) No weeding. Both the trials were conducted in RCB design with four replications in each season. Ronstar 25EC was applied using a power sprayer. The sprayer was calibrated before use. Ronstar 12L was applied directly is the field from the container. The container was specially made for application of the herbicide. Herbicides were applied 5 days after rice transplanting. The test varieties were BR11 and BR14, respectively in the T. Aman and Boro seasons. the plot size was 5- x 3-m and spacing was 20- x 20-cm. Each block was separated from others by 0.50 m alleys. The land was prepared by power tiller. Fertilizers were applied at 90:60:40:20 kg NPKS/ha and 80:60:40:20 kg NPKS/ha in Boro and T. Aman season, respectively. Except N all fertilizers were applied at the final stage of land preparation while nitrogen was applied as top dressing in two equal splits: at tillering and at PI stage. In Aman season the crop was grown under rainfed condition with one supplemental irrigation given at later part of crop growth. Boro crop was grown under irrigated condition. Optimum crop protection was given in Boro but no protection was given in transplant Aman. All management were given at optimum level. Data were taken on the following parameters- i) Plant height (cm), ii) Weed weight, iii) Yield components and grain yield, iv) Straw yield and v) Cost of weed control. Ten plants were measured at random at maturity of the crop in each treatment. The plants were measured from the ground level to the extreme tip of the panicles. Weeds were collected at flowering using quadrates which were placed at two randomly selected places in each treatment and weeds inside the quadrate were collected by hand. The roots of the weeds were removed and the remaining above ground parts were washed and dried under electric fan to remove water. These were then classified into species and dried to constant weight in electric oven at 80°C constant temperature. The dry weight was taken with a top loading electric balance. Panicles of 25 hills were counted at random in each treatment to the panicle number/m², Ten plants were taken at random from out side the harvested area excluding border rows in each treatment. Grain/panicles, sterility percent and 1000-grain weight were calculated from this sample in each treatment. Paddy was harvested from 4 m² area at the centre of the plot. It was threshed with a pedal thresher. Grain weight was taken with an electric balance and yield was adjusted to 14% moisture and expressed as t/ha. After threshing straws were dried in the sun. One kg of straw from the sample was dried in electric oven at 80°C. The weight lost were calculated thus straw weight was adjusted and expressed as t/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

Ronstar 12L was found effective as hand weeding and Ronstar 25EC in controlling weeds in T. Aman and Boro rice. Since sprayer might not be always available to the farmers, Ronstar 12L would be helpful for them in controlling weeds. Ronstar 12L is also cheaper than hand weeding.
