The experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka to study the effect of inoculation and fertilization on the yield and yield component of mungbean during the period from March to May 2007. The variety BARI Mung-5 was used as the test crop. Urea (45 kg ha-1), triple super phosphate,TSP (80 kg ha-1) and murate of potash, MOP (55 kg ha-1) and Rhizobium inoculant (1.5 kg ha-1) either in sole or in combination along with a control comprised the treatments. The maximum number of nodules plant-1 (22.60), pods plant-1 (20.87), pod length (8.71 cm), seeds pod-1 (8.53), 1000 seeds (27.82 g), seed yield (1.40 t ha-1) and harvest index were recorded from 45, 80, 55 kg ha-1 application of urea, TSP, MoP + Rhizobium inoculation while the minimum nodules plant-1 (13.20), pods plant-1 (12.20), pod length (4.36 cm), seeds pod-1 (5.87), 1000 seeds weight (17.79 g) and seed yield (0.59 t ha-1) were recorded from control. The highest harvest index (28.57%) was recorded from 45, 80, 55 kg ha-1 Urea TSP MoP and Rhizobium, while the lowest (18.59%) was recorded from 80 kg ha-1 TSP.

To study the influence of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and Rhizobium on the yield performance of mungbean

The experiment was conducted in the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to study the effect of inoculation and fertilization on the yield and yield components of mungbean during the period from March to May 2007. The soil of the experimental site lies in the agroecological zone of Madhupur tract (AEZ-28) having deep red brown terrace soil belonging to Tejgoan series. Top soil was silty clay loam in texture with low organic matter (0.82%). Soil pH varied from 5.8 - 6.0. The soil contained organic carbon – 0.45%, organic matter - 0.78%, total nitrogen - 0.07%, phosphorus - 22.08 μg g-1 soil, sulphur 25.98 μg g-1 soil, magnesium - 1.00 meq 100 g-1 soil, boron - 0.48 μg g-1 soil, copper 3.54 μg g-1 soil, and zinc - 3.32 μg g-1 soil. Peat based Rhizobial inoculum was used containing 108 cell g-1 inoculum. Initial rhizobial population of the soil was about or below 103 cells g-1 of soil. The variety BARI mung-5 was used as the test crop. The seeds were collected from the Pulse Seed Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur. The Rhizobium inoculum (1.5 kg ha-1) and chemical fertilizers (45-80-55 kg ha-1 urea-TSP-MOP) either in sole or in combination comprised the treatments; T1: Control (No fertilizer and no Rhizobium), T2: only urea, T3: only triple super phosphate (TSP), T4: Only murate of potash (MOP), T5: Urea + TSP, T6: TSP + MOP, T7: Urea + TSP + MOP, T8: only Rhizobium inoculant, T9: Rhizobium + urea, T10: Rhizobium + TSP, T11: Rhizobium + MOP, T12: Rhizobium + Urea+ TSP, T13: Rhizobium + TSP + MOP, T14: Rhizobium + Urea + TSP + MOP. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The land was prepared by 4 operations of ploughing, harrowing and laddering. The stubble and weeds were removed. The size of each unit plot was 3.0 m × 2.0 m. The seeds of mungbean were sown on 04 April, 2007 in rows having a depth of 2 - 3 cm. Row to row distance was 30 cm. Thinning was done at 8 and 15 days after sowing (DAS) to maintain 10 cm between adjacent plants in each row. The crop field was weeded at 15 and 30 DAS. Irrigation was done as per requirement. Protection measure was taken as and when required. Harvesting was done when 90% of the pods became brown to black in color. The matured pods were collected by hand picking from a pre demarcated area of seven linear meter at the center of each plot. Ten plants from each plot were randomly sampled to study the number of nodules plant-1 at flower initiation; number of nodes, number of pods plant-1, pod length and number of seeds pod-1 at maturity. Seed yield hectare-1 and 1000-seed weight were determined from harvested sample. Biological yield included stover yield and seed yield. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the MSTAT-computer package program. The means were adjudged by using DMRT at 5% level of significance.

From this study, it may be concluded that Rhizobium inoculation along with the use of recommended fertilizers increased mungbean seed yield which may be attributed to the increased number of nodule plant-1, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1 and 1000-seed weight.
