Identification of Wide Compatibility Genes in Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve widely compatible varieties (WCYs) from four different varietal groups (1 Indica, 3 Aus, 6 Japonica and 2 tropical Japonica) identified at IRRI and in Japan were evaluated to study their inheritance on fertility trait along with the allelic relationship of known WCYs possessing identified genes. WC-trait of BPI 76 (P), Norin PL9, Calotoc, Fossa HY, Moroberekan, Palawan, IR47686-5-10-B, IR47699-29-6-B, N22 and Lambayeque was controlled by a single donninant gene. WC-gene of Dular was found to be non-allelic to SSn possessed by Norin PL9, another known WCY. Incorporation of the identified WC-gene from Norin PL9 and Dular in the genetically diverse Indica and Tropical Japonica parental lines can result in developing Indicaffropical Japonica hybrids.

Objectives:

This paper reports inheritance of the WC-trait identified in several widely compatible varieties (WCVs) at IRRI and allelic relationship of two known WCVs, Dular and Norin PL9.

Methodology:

Twelve rice cultivars, viz BP176 (P), Norin PL9, Calotoc, Fossa HV, Pate Blance Mnl, Moroberekan, Palawan, IR47686-5-1O-B, IR47699-29-6-B, Dular, N22 and Lambayeque belonging to four varietal groups viz, Indica, Japonica, Tropical Japonica and Aus identified as WCVs at IRRI and in Japan were used to study the inheritance of WCv. These cultivars were crossed with Indica (IR36) and Japonica (Taichung 65) testers. The F1s were used to make 24 three- variety test crosses of WCV/Indica//Japonica and WCV/Japonica/lIndica. Dular and Norin PL9, two known WCVs, were crossed with both Indica and Japonica testers to study their allelic relationship. Three variety test cross F1s, parents and testers were planted at IRRI during 1993 dry season (December 1992 to April 1993). Parents, single cross F1s and testers were planted in one row plots (2.5 cm) while the three variety test cross F1s were planted in 5-10 rows depending on the availability of the seeds. Spikelet fertility was recorded in all plant from each plot. Two primary panicle per plant were covered with glassine bag just before panicle emergence to avoid outcrossing. Spikelet fertility was estimated in percentage from the bagged panicle of all plants in each experimental unit. The lowest spikelet fertility in WC parents and testers was 60.5%. Therefore in three-variety cross populations, plants with spikelet fertility above 60% were considered as fertile and those below 60% were classified as semisterile. A X2 test was applied to test the goodness of fit of segregation ratio of the three variety test cross.
